European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - March 19, 1992, Darmstadt, Hesse Visitors walk along the m4nec lines which include More than 1,000 stones beginning with a semicircle near monuments of Brittany mystery surrounds the greatest monuments in Brittany. These Are the megaliths or great stones which Are traced to a race of people who preceded the Cauls sometime Between 3500 and 1800 . The District of carnac is world famous for its lines of Menhir or Stone markers and for Dolmen primitive burial tombs. At carnac the Menhir Are arranged in parallel lines running East to West and ending in a semicircle. The lines seem to be astronomically set and Are believed to be connected with the Sunrise or Sunset. There Are More than 3,000 of the great stones in the carnac District alone. The most interesting of the stones Are in the m6nec lines outside carnac on the d-196 Highway. Here More than 1,000 stones the tallest of them Over 12 feet Are placed Over a three-Quarter-mile-by-300-foot area. On an off coast Island not far from carnac is the Carvinis tumulus the most famous of the mystery structures. The tumulus is a 25-foot-High Mound of stones nearly 350 feet in circumference. Inside a 40-foot gallery leads to what is believed to be a Royal funeral chamber. Boats make the 15-minute crossing from Larmor Baden to the Island daily during the summer and upon request the rest of the year. Nearby at Looma Raquer Are two of the most famous Menhir in the world. Now broken into five parts the great Menhir weighs an estimated 347 tons and is nearly 64 feet Long. Two minutes walk away is the merchants table an unusual Dolmen nearly 1 30 feet across.
