On the opening Day of the tournament thursday the Only upsets were mild ones by two no. 9 seeds. Fridays surprises came in the West and Southeast regional. In the West new Mexico state eliminated fifth seeded Depaul 81-73 and southwestern Louisiana downed no. 4 Oklahoma 87-83. In the Southeast Tulane beat seventh seeded St. Johns 61-57 and East Tennessee state stunned no. 3 Arizona 87-80 Sec Page 28. In the East Kentucky beat old Dominion 88-69, Massachusetts overpowered Fordham 85-58,off upsets Caa men Syracuse Defeated Princeton 51-43 and Iowa state edged North Carolina Charlotte 76-74. Kansas clobbered Howard 100-67, Cincinnati dumped Delaware 85-47, Michigan state beat Southwest Missouri state 61-54 and Texas i paso ousted Evansville 55-50 in the Midwest. Urcla beat Robert Morris 73-53 and Louisville downed Wake Forest 81-58 in the  Massachusetts 85, Fordham 58 the minutemen used a balanced attack and runs of 20-6 and 19-3 to rout Fordham. Massachusetts 29-4 stretched its winning Streak to 13 games. Massachusetts had five scorers in double figures including Louis Roe with a career High 19,Syracuse 51, Princeton 43 Syracuse freshman Lawrence Moten scored 23 Points and single hand edly ended Princeton a run of near upsets in the first round of the tournament. Moten nearly outscored the tigers by himself in the second half and had 14 straight Points for the orangemen 22-9 at one  St. 76,  74 Iowa stare which came into the tournament on a serious skid nearly Slid out of the tournament despite leading North Carolina Charlotte by nine Points with less than two minutes left. But the loth seeded cyclones pulled out the Victory after Charlotte 23-9 closed to 71-69 on a 3-Pointer by Rodney Odom with 45 seconds left. Justus Thigpen led Iowa state 21-12 with 21  Kansas 100, Howard 67 at Dayton Ohio Kansas dominated inside and shot 61 percent to overwhelm Howard. The Jay Hawks 27-4 scored 35 of their 42 baskets on layups dunks or other inside shots. Syracuse a Conrad Mcrae and Princeton a Rick Hielscher Battle for the Ball Friday at Worchester mass. Southeast Michigan 73, Temple 66 freshman Jalen Rose scored 19 Points including a tic breaking 3-Pointer with 4 53 remaining to Lead Michigan Over Temple. So Louisiana 87, Oklahoma 83 Bryon Starks scored 21 Points and southwestern Louisiana 21-10 made 12 consecutive free throws Down the stretch to upset Oklahoma 21-9five players Sank two free throws each for the raging cajuns in the final 1 48, starting with a pair by Todd Hill that broke a 75-All tie. Eric Mouton Marie four in a Row in the last 11 seconds to Seal southwestern a  Mexico St. 81, Depaul 73 Sam Crawford had 21 Points and 11 assists As new Mexico state upset Depaul. The 12th-seeded aggie 24-7 led by As Many As 15 Points in the first half and Depaul got no closer than three in the second half. A no one thought we would win our own tournament and now we re looking Forward to the next game a said new Mexico state coach Neil Mccarthy. Cliff Reed had 16 Points for new Mexico state which won the big West tournament after finishing third in the regular season six games behind univ which was ineligible for Mcaa play. Chris Hickman had 13 Points and William Benjamin 10 for the  81, Wake Forest 58 Dwayne Morton scored 18 of his 20 Points in the second half and keyed an unusual four Point play that boosted Louisville. The eighth seeded cardinals 1910 led 35-25 at halftime but Wake Forest closed to 4440 with 13 40 left when Morton a 6-foot-6 Sophomore made a 3-Pointer. Tuesdays schedule has Rhode Island at Boston College and Utah at Arizona state the Scarlet knights never trailed against James Madison 21-11but they had to withstand a spirited comeback by the Dukes that saw them close to just two Points with 10 seconds to play. Worthy Ihen iced the game by hitting two free throws with five seconds to play. Worthy hit 6 of 9 shots from the Field and 7 of 8 free throws. The season ended for James Madison because of its defense. The Dukes who shared the regular season title in the colonial athletic association had limited opponents to 42.8 percent shooting from the Field this season and had held 16 of their last 23 opponents under 70 Points. Rutgers beat the defense hitting 26 of 50 shots or 52 percent and scoring 7a Points. A the defense has been a Strong Point for us All season Quot James Madison coach lefty Driesell said.
