A gov. Mario a Cuomo reported income of $304,405 on his 1991 tax returns including $124,200 in compensation for eight speeches he gave last year. The governor who is considered one of the country s most gifted democratic orators was paid an average of $15,525 per speech. It was the fifth consecutive year that Cuomo has nearly doubled his annual state salary of $130,000 by delivering speeches. The governor has averaged $133,590 in honorariums from 1987 to 1991, a period when Cuomo has been in demand As a speaker at least partly because he was a potential presidential candidate. His most lucrative year was 1989, when he received $151,150. Cuomo and his wife Matilda reported paying $88,322 in Federal state and new York City income taxes. The governor made his 1991 tax returns available for reporters to inspect Friday. As has been his practice throughout three terms in office he refused to allow copies to be made. Cuomo returns $30,000 of his state salary to the state each year a gift that is tax deductible. Tax returns show Hillary Clinton top breadwinner in household from wire reports Arkansas gov. Bill Clinton and his wife Hillary earned a total of $244,356 last year most of it by Hillary Clinton according to tax returns made Public by the Clinton on Friday. The returns showed that the Clinton paid $49,828 in Federal income taxes and $12,424 in Arkansas state income taxes. A Clinton reported income of $48,854, including his salary As governor of $35,000, Hillary Clinton who is a lawyer and member of several corporate boards reported a salary of $109,720 from her Law firm. She also had $64,700 in directors fees. Among the boards on which she serves is Wal Mart stores the largest retailer in America which is based in Arkansas. The Clinton each reported receiving $5,500 in honorariums which Are usually speaking fees. But they did not report who had paid the fees. Interest and investment income made up the rest of the income. Democratic presidential candidate Jerry Brown paid $15,141 in Federal taxes in 1991 on an adjusted Gross income of $117,340, according to a partial return re leased by his Campaign Friday. Browne a Campaign released Only the first two pages of the return he mailed to the government earlier in the week showing $110,927 in business income and $15,248 in interest and dividend income. The return included investment losses of nearly $6,000. The specific sources of Browne a income and losses were not detailed since the Campaign did not immediately release the various schedules and attachments that accompanied his return. Clinton has noted in Campaign speeches that he is the lowest paid governor in the country. He is allowed to use a Public relations fund appropriated by the state for whatever he wishes. In 1990, the associated press reported he paid taxes on $19,000 of income from that fund but he reported no income from it in 1991. The Clin tons total income of $244,356 included $6,780 in interest on municipal Bonds on which taxes Are not owed and was further reduced by a $3,000 deduction for a Short term capital loss and a $148 loss on a partnership. That reduced the total reported income to $234,4-8 on the couple s Federal income tax return
