European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - April 19, 1992, Darmstadt, Hesse Books Pinckney weaves through Black life in a High Cotton by Esther b. Fein the new York times the narrator of Darryl Pinckney a debut novel High Cotton Farrar Straus amp Giroukis clearly a refraction if not a reflection of the author. The Anonymous narrator is a Young Black Man like Pinckney raised in Indianapolis by educated parents who were the children of educated parents. His Grandfather like Pinckney a own was a graduate of Brown and Harvard who became a minister. He wears thick glasses is a bit of an anglophile and graduated from Columbia like Pinckney. And the narrator like the author is in search of what being Black Means to him both practically and in a Way so integral it is almost genetic but neither is looking for what being Black Means to anyone else. A i never wanted this Book to be identified As this statement about the Black Middle class a Pinckney said in a recent interview at his publishers office in new York. A i think too often people have read novels by Black authors looking to see who has the True interpretation and who is defining the Black experience. And if someone wrote about the Black Middle class it was seen As being at the expense of Blacks in another class. I done to want to come off like a Black Neo con in the Book but at the same time in a not a cultural militant. I done to believe in Black agreement. I done to think i have it seems an unavoidable and mixed Blessing that certain authors by dint of their backgrounds become without Effort or intent symbols voices of their generations or their people. They May be hailed As Brilliant writers but whether they Are Gay Black Young or hispanic they Are also read As windows onto other worlds. David Leavitts books for example have been praised for their writing but he is not thought of As just a writer he is a Gay writer. Sandra Cisneross stories reveal the lives of Maxi let a Sisi 1 i i is Darryl Pinckney a a in a not a cultural can americans and in the process have turned her into a hispanic literary spokeswoman. Jay Mclnerney and Bret Easton Ellis wrote about the Young and the hip and quickly came to represent the people they portrayed. The Mantle is at once sought after and unwanted. It can draw attention to authors but it can also Burden them with a perceived social responsibility they May not want. Pinckney is a Likely candidate for such symbolism but he rejects it. He May be Young Black and educated and he May explore All of those parts of himself in his autobiographical novel but his Book derives As much from Dostoevsky and Colette he said As it does from James Baldwin and Zora Neale Hurston. Pinckney at 38, is a literary critic of considerable regard and he contributes regularly to the new York review of books. He wants his Book to be testimony not Only of his race but of his Devotion to literature As a rising Sun too hot a Story for japanese studios by the associated press the japanese Are quietly exerting control Over America a character warns in Michael Crichton a new Japan bashing Best seller rising Sun. The Book itself May have been a test Case of that idea. Was it shunned by several Hollywood studios despite promising Market potential As a film because their japanese owners were Well quietly exerting control not at All says Sony corp., the Tokyo based owner of Columbia and tristan pictures neither of which bid for rising Sun. Absolutely not according to Matsushita electric Industrial co., the Parent of Mca which in turn owns Universal studios. Universal also stayed out of the bidding. A studio 20th Century Fox was the Only one to bid on the movie rights. Filming is scheduled to begin in june with Sean Connery playing an aging savvy detective with inside knowledge of Japan and Wesley Snipes portraying his protege. Philip Kaufman director of the right stuff will direct. A we do not get involved Quot with bidding decisions said Jane Sweeney a spokeswoman for Matsushita in Tokyo. Quot this is not even a question Mca would bring up with but officials in Hollywood close to the dealing for movie rights to the Book say that indirectly japanese ownership had a powerful Impact on decision making Quot the Bottom line is we Are owned by a japanese company Quot said a source at Sony pictures entertainment the japanese subsidiary that runs Columbia and tristan. A Why would we spend a ton of company Money to buy film rights to a Book universally acknowledged to be a Japan bashing Book Quot said the source who spoke by Telephone on condition of anonymity. Industry officials say it was strange that Only 20th Century Fox bid on rising Sun despite the books big name author who has a proven record in Hollywood a dramatic plot and Good timing in the marketplace. The fast moving plot of rising Sun revolves around the attempt of a los Angeles based japanese corporation to cover up a murder.
