When we swore to uphold the constr Lution of the United states and to defend the country against All enemies foreign and Domestic we did so knowing that we had to accept the Many unpleasant aspects of service life. But we were led to believe that if we survived these conditions for 20 or More years our government would make up for this sacrifice by providing us with a lifetime pension that would not be eroded by inflation free medical care for us and our dependents for life use of commissaries and exchanges and space available travel. Titis in effect would be deferred pay. Lack of funding for military hospitals forces theft to turn away most retirees under 65 years old and All Over 65. Whatever comes out of Hillary Rodham Clinton s health plan you can bet your boots that service members and especially retired service members Are going to get it in the neck. More than 50 million retirees and pensioners receive Cost of Tiv Irig allowances col of these Only the military and Federal civilian retirees were singled out for cola reductions it a the recently enacted omnibus budget reconciliation act of 1993, but even Here military retirees Are treated As second class citizens. Military Retiree Colas will be delayed a total of 39 months Over the next five years compared with a delay of nine months for Federal civilian retirees or the same time Frame. This is a Clear breach of the commitment Congress has made to military retirees for More than 30 years. Rep. James Moran a a has introduced a Bill . 3023, that would require equity Between Colas for military retirees and Federal civilian retirees. 1 never thought i would live to see the Day when moral decay would pervade so deeply into our government that it would fail to live up to the promises it made to the Fine Young people whom it induced to sacrifice a Normal life and sometimes their lives to fight its hot and cold wars. The military won the cold War and now it is being punished. What Are the Young people whom we will need to fill the military ranks m the future going to think about these broken promises will they make the sacrifices As those who have gone before them have done Only to see the government go Back on its word when it comes time to pay the remainder of the earned payed rider Rhein main a German Many officers arrogant in reference to a doily duty is of but choosing a lawyer a . 21in a outraged that a Leader of troops would have the intellectual arrogance to demean the abilities of the very people he leads. This attitude unfortunately is not unique among members of our officer corps. For some unknown reason Many officers seem to hold the opinion that the people they Lead Are of a lesser Breed than themselves. Most members of the enlisted ranks Are both highly trained and Well educated. In fact the implication that enlisted personnel and their dependents Are incapable of selecting their own attorneys is insulting and ultimately ludicrous. The quote from the article a cd open dents Trust and depend that the military will provide qualified trustworthy offi cars who Are under continuous training and supervision a literally reeks with a to ionization. We did no to go into the military to be kept like Little children i am proud of the people who work for me. In my work Center alone out of 12 people Thaye two who have baccalaureate degrees one who has a masters in business management and several who have associates degrees. This does not include thew people working toward their College credits. V rather than demeaning the people 1 Lead 1 make every Effort to empower them. Maybe if we treated people with More respect the captains attitude would become a thing of the past. Keep up the Good journalism. A Patrick Spingler Naples Italy a a a. A a gotta love Naples a recent letter on the beauties of the italian Countryside around Naples struck a chord with my husband and me. We lived in Naples for nearly three years and frequently took the exact drive the writer did through the Parco Nazionale do a Bruzzo Altadena Lago i Barrea Etc. We Well know the Little Trattoria at fore Ola do Acero having eaten there Many times. Reading the account brought Back Many pleasant memories. We chose to live in Naples itself and never regretted doing so As we were Only a Short bus ride to the old Spacca Napoli Quarter where we found our favorite Little pizzeria or the Vomero and via Roma areas with their Nice shops. Many times we would go downtown for an evening pass Giatta and pizza afterwards an inexpensive evening with the Lively Friendly neapolitan always guaranteeing us a Good time. We took full advantage of the proximity of places like Capri the Amalfi coast Pompeii Etc., not to mention the Art treasures at seemingly every turn. In our years in Italy we also lived in Gaeta from 1979 through 1984 we travelled a great Deal and concede that Naples has More problems than most other italian cities. But people Are greatest treasure for nowhere else in Italy do the people have As big a heart As the neapolitan. To get to know them and read their history which explains much about modern Day Naples will bring great rewards to anyone who takes the time to do so. What i give at this time of year to stroll Down via san Gregoria Armeno a a a Christmas Alley Quot a and look at the Lovely Presepio figurines so carefully worked on All year Long by the artisans and now for Sale then to Stop afterwards at scaturchio bar for an espresso and one of their renowned delicious pastries. And finally the bus ride Home with the breathtaking sweep of the Bay of Naples at night with All the lights like some Brilliant Diamond necklace at the foot of mount Vesuvius in the cold Clear air. A Lauren St. Pierre Londo great expectations the single Soldier with a 1-year-old child in bad Kreuz Nach Germany who does no to want to live in Mainz seems to be jiving under several misconceptions. She feels that the housing office should or accommodate needs so she is not in convenience by purchasing a or of commuting 30 minutes. Would she expect this service at a stateside base of course not housing lists Are just As Long in the states. Has she considered Economy housing title sure she could find a reasonably priced apartment near Rose Barracks or within a Short bus ride. Why does no to the Soldier have a car Loans Are easily obtained at the local banking facility. She could also use share a ride or car Pool from Mainz with other soldiers. Housing is in Short Supply in bad Kreuz Nach and Many other communities while housing in Mainz is available and must be utilized. It is strictly first come first served and you take what you get or you May get nothing. She should work with housing office to ensure that wont happen. The Soldier should be More optimistic and open minded about situation and do something to help herself instead of expecting others to do everything for . The Only limits on Are the ones she has placed on herself. A Connie Jarvis Baum older German Stop suicide help now i am disturbed by the recent Praise of or. Jack Kevorkian As a hero. I have the utmost compassion for those suffering from extreme pain during a terminal illness. However there is a recent Branch of Medicine that specializes in pain management there Are Means which can alleviate such suffering. More far reaching is the unacceptable idea that Man can end god Given life for any and every reason. What May Start As an acceptable procedure Only for extreme pain May soon be acceptable for prolonged unemployment disappointment in love frustration of ones goals Etc. A comparable example is abortion which was legalized 21 years ago patently for the a hard cases of rape incest or possible deformity of the baby. Since Ihen 30 million unborn children have been killed Only about 5 percent of which have been for the hard cases. Once the Barrier has been breached the trickle of acceptable cases soon becomes a flood. A a a Euse p.
