Chuck Vinch staff writer i on movies 1 blink rated r must see Worth your time passable entertainment Corning soon to a video outlet near you and you can wait once in a while movie fans Are blessed with actors who have the Price less ability to Rise above their material which in too Many instances these Days Borders on the sub banal. Such per formers appear so infrequently that viewers should rejoice when they do. Blink a tidy psychological thriller has not one but two such actors made Leine Stowe and Aidan Quinn. Neither is Hollywood a list material. None of their films have been Box of fice blockbusters although Stowe is probably better known on the basis of her work in unlawful entry with Ray Liotta and Kurt Russell and stakeout with Richard Dreyfuss in which Quinn played the bad Guy. But despite their relatively Low profiles both Quinn and Stowe Are very Good actors who invariably improve any movie they do. Their talents Are used to maximum effect Here by director Michael Apted and writer Dana Stevens and this film probably would not be Worth a second glance without them. Stowe plays Emma Brody a fiddler in a Irish Folk band who has been Blind since age eight when her shrew ish Mother bashed her face into a Mir ror for a minor transgression. Through the Miracle of modern Medicine she has a Cornea transplant that restores her sight but temporarily burdens her with perceptual delay a condition that prevents her from consciously registering visual images until hours or even Days later. Not Long after her operation she s awakened in the Middle of the night by sounds of a disturbance in the apart ment above her. Cautiously opening her door she spies someone descend ing the stairs but later wonders if she was t dreaming or hallucinating. Turns out she was t a heinous crime occurred the work of a brutal serial killer and Emma is the Only wit Ness detective John Hallstrom Quinn has to work with. But his investigation flounders because he s not sure he can Trust her about what she has really seen. To complicate things further there Are signs that Emma May be next on the killer s hit Parade. Stevens provides the two Lead actors with dialogue sharper than Lorena Bobbitt s cutlery. The Early scenes in particular have a finely honed Edge that is far above the trite material clog Ging the plots of most thrillers like so much celluloid cholesterol. John and Emma both have personal demons to Deal with. At first they War ily Circle each other acknowledging a Mutual attraction but hesitating to Bare their souls for fear of getting burned. Emma is already jumpy about losing the comfortable feeling of control she had while Blind. Having to worry about being stalked by a madman while trying to Deal with input from an unfamiliar sense that was Long shut Down is Knock ing her off balance. John meanwhile is a lonely Man who hides behind a facade of Macho bluster. One of Quinn s Best scenes comes when his character after a night of boozing wakes up in the bed of a woman he can t recognize. His Subtle reactions and his ensuing banter with a Small boy outside the woman s apart ment Speaks volumes. Unfortunately this engrossing vein of character exploration is Only the setup for the actual cat and mouse confrontations with the killer which Pale in comparison. The motivations of the killer Paul Dillon who gets about three minutes of total screen time Are laughably inane and the film flies too close to the formula that Mars too Many psychos on the Loose flicks. But if the later scenes feel Anticlimactic the film still works on several Levels. Photographer Dante Spinotti of fers Eye catching visual effects to rep resent Emma s Post operation Point of View. He also suffuses the film with soft shadowy lighting that is perfectly suited to the mood. Apted shows a sure hand behind the camera sparking satisfying chills and thrills and also orchestrating a couple of love scenes that while Brief and relatively innocuous by current standards Are surprisingly erotic. Apted and Stevens succeed admirably in doing what so Many films of any genre fail to achieve these Days they develop characters Worth rooting for. That the characters Are played by actors As Good As Quinn and Stowe Are Only the icing on the cake. They give blink a refreshing intimacy that makes it Worth three stars.
