America the land of the free is Aland where people can make choices and decisions in their lives to map out their own course in this world. It seems to me that this Freedom we cherish is some times a double Standard. In order to enjoy these precious freedoms that americans die Tor you have to qualify for them by being a male. If the Citadel accepts government funding for its programs and is in the business of producing tomorrow s Mili tary leaders All members of the United states should be Given equal Access to that institution. To Tell a woman that she cannot attend this time honoured institution because of the very fact that she is a woman is to go against everything the United states of America claims to fight for Freedom and equal rights. If this is the message lesson offered to future leaders of our military forces then i question the fundamental leadership skills being taught to the Young Lieuten ants that come out of the esteemed Citadel. . Two Are Public Andone is private. At last count there Are 84 All female four year colleges or universities left in the United states. Single sex schools enjoy a multitude of benefits. Statistics show that students male and female generally have higher Grade Point averages and a higher rate of Job placement after completing their studies. I am a 1980 graduate of West Point and member of the first class with women. I personally was not thrilled atthe time with the idea of women invading West Point but my opinion gradually changed during my four years there. I came to greatly respect a Good num Ber of my female classmates having seen firsthand that they handled the experience just As Well and in some cases better than some of the male graduates. Looking Back on my experience attest Point and now giving careful thought to the situation at the Citadel find myself asking what exactly is the purpose of having an All male Servic Academy i really can t come up with any plausible  is All Well and Good but the male Only environment at the Citadel was first established in the Middle of the 19th Century when women s roles in the military were significantly different than at present to say the least. Women Are now an integral part of the military Structure from the lowest enlisted rank to general officer and Are now Able to select assignments which will subject them to combat situations. About the Only male Only domains remaining inthe military today Are male latrines and male Barracks rooms. However even though i feel that the Citadel s male Only policy is outdated and that women finally should be admitted Shannon Faulkner should be sent on the train Home. All principles aside she was not hones with her admissions process having deleted All gender references. She knowingly omitted this information thinking it the Best Way to Force the Issue of admit Ting women. What this did is demonstrate that she is manipulative and  one agrees or disagrees with the idea of women at the service academies there is no question that cadets must demonstrate the highest standards of honesty and integrity. Shannon missed the boat on this Issue and should be tossed out leaving room for women cadets of High , the Citadel s first woman graduate will not be the one who cheated the system for her own personal gain and Media attention. People accustomed to the fast paced no thought required plots of the traditional television series May find them selves bored or perplexed by the com plex slowly developed Story lines of this drama. But to condemn the show Only because it portrays ugly parts of Amer ican history suggests that we should for get the civil rights movement Ever existed. In the 30-some years since the show s time setting Many people have fought Given lip their freedoms As a result of acts of civil disobedience and some died in the fight for Equality. But this is hardly a reason to cancel a show which depict this very Battle. Likewise no one would say that watch ing movies about world War ii is disrespectful to the memory of the americans who fought and died in that War or that civil War shows should be dropped be cause they portray slavery. Perhaps / Fly away does suggest a time gone by in a place where most Whites were prejudiced and most Blacks were treated like second class  it also portrays these individuals Black and White struggling with their prejudices and disadvantages and grow ing to overcome them. It shows people facing difficult Deci Sions about How to live their lives in rela Tion to others around them. It shows  ple searching for the strength to make Tough decisions in Tough situations. The Battle for Equality and Justice Fornall has hardly been won by now. Certainly Many americans have become More sensitive to the problems of prejudice. Millions of americans had yet to be born at that Point in american history and do not know what injustice is. Stillmore live through it but have already forgotten what the struggle for Equality was All about. Cancelling this Quality Tele vision show and just forgetting about an uncomfortable Era in american history snot doing anyone a favor. A.
