Yorkshire celebrates its abbeys by Marc Kemmis Yorkshire has a higher concentration of important monastic remains including a Cluster of great cistercian abbeys than any other part of England. The charming walled City of York 193 Miles North of London has the ruins of the 900-year-old St. Mary s Abbey which provided the setting for the famed York mystery plays again this summer. Special events in conjunction with the Celebration of Yorkshire abbeys include a victorian picnic at mount Grace priory aug. 6-7, and a crafts extravaganza at Whitby Abbey aug. 20-21. There has been music by Moonlight at fountains Abbey and performances of a Winter s 7
