At almost the exact moment pungent doors seize an unsuspecting nose the eyes of a visitor Are bombarded by a variety of boats painted vibrant colors Bobbing in the Blue Harbor. Sounds of turkish fishermen calling to each other or to customers mingle with children s cackles and seagulls cries As both flutter around the docks. Usually boats returning to Istanbul with their morning catches have trouble finding a parking place in the crowded Harbor. So the fishermen tie their boats to each other Bow to Stern to Bow to Stern and hop from boat to boat to reach Shore. As with fish markets around the world Early morning is the freshest time at Kum Kapi which Means Sand door some sales Are made right from the boats but most fish Are sold in the Dock s open Market. After the morning customers get their fill from the Dock Market the leftover fish Are loaded onto a boat paid for by the fishermen and transported to another open Market across the Harbor. By some Miracle the overloaded boat reaches the other Side intact and the fishermen promptly go to work again Selling their catch to a new crowd. Other parts of the Kum Kapi Dock Are just As Busy. On the a shaped Man made part that juts out into the Harbor wrinkled women Bend Over nets intent on repairing any tears they spend the better part of the Day at their labors. Most of the women Wear glasses for the close work which they do so swiftly that their bustling hands resemble the Quick stitching of a sewing machine. Fruits and vegetables fill bins that Are loaded onto boats for transport to parts of the City that can be reached faster by boat than by truck on the congested streets.
