Sometimes old is Best. While Reading the mail in search of something to print on this special Day to Honor fathers i was unable to find anything nearly so appealing As these Golden oldies. Some of you will remember them. Others May be Reading them for the first time. In either Case i Hope you enjoy today a offering. My father a when i was 4 years old my daddy can do anything. 5 years old my daddy knows a whole lot. 6 years old my dad is smarter than your dad. 8 years old my dad does no to know exactly everything. 10 years old in the Olden Days when my dad grew up things were sure different. 12 years old of Well naturally father does no to know anything about that. He is too old to remember his childhood. 14 years old done to pay any attention to my father. He is so old fashioned 21 years old him my lord he a hopelessly out of Date. 25 years old dad knows a Little bit about it but then he should because he has been around so Long. 30 years old maybe we should ask dad what he thinks. After All he a had a lot of experience. 35 years old in a not doing a single thing until i talk to dad. 40 years old i wonder How dad would have handled it. He was so Wise and had a world of experience. 50 years old id give anything if dad were Here now so i could talk this Over with him. Too bad i did no to appreciate How smart he was. I could have Learned a lot from him. Dear Ann Landers a great Man died today. He Wasny to a world Leader or a famous doctor or a War hero or a sports figure. He was no business tycoon and you would never see his name in the financial pages. But he was one of the greatest men who Ever lived. He was my father. I guess you might say he was a person who was never interested in getting credit or receiving honors. He did corny things like pay Bills on time go to Church on sunday and serve As an officer in the Pat. He helped his kids with their Homework and drove his wife to do the grocery shopping on thursday nights. He got a great kick out of hauling his teen agers and their friends around to and from football games. Dad enjoyed simple pastimes like picnics in the Park and pitching horseshoes. Opera Wasny to exactly his cup of Tea. He liked country music mowing the grass and running with the dog. He did no town a Tuxedo and in a sure he never tasted caviar. Tonight is my first night without him. I done to know what to do with myself so i am writing to you Ann. I am sorry now for the times i did no to show him the proper respect. But i am grateful for a lot of other things. I am thankful that god let me have my father for 15 years. And i am Happy that i was Able to let him know How much i loved him. That wonderful Man died with a smile on his face and fulfilment in his heart. He knew that he was a great Success As a husband and a father a brother a son and a Friend. I wonder How Many millionaires can say that. A his daughter c creators Syndicate military policy on a living wills discussed a a before my wife and i left the states we both had a living wills a made. The purpose of these wills is to give instructions to medical personnel in the event that we become terminally ill or Are in a comatose state and Are unable to make decisions regarding our treatment. Specifically we do not want to be kept alive by a a extraordinary life support systems if there is Little or no Hope for recovery. Our problem is that we have not been Able to learn if . Military medical facilities will Honor these living wills. We have been to staff judge advocate offices As Well As medical facilities and have been Given conflicting opinions. No facts or written regulations a just opinions. Can we have an answer and if the answer is a no a then Why not neither of us wishes to become a living a a vegetables nor endure endless pain for no reason nor do we wish to be a Burden to our loved ones if our medical condition becomes hopeless. Does anyone have the a real scoop a name and location withheld editors note a we received two replies to this letter. The first is from col. Albert j. Ficke chief clinical Medicine division office of the command surgeon he Safe the execution of a living wills in an overseas environment is a Complex Medico Legal Issue for which there is no single answer. Physicians favor knowing the desires of their patients who May not be Able to communicate and would like to provide care commensurate with those desires. At the same time physicians must obey the Laws which govern their practice. In an overseas location air Force physicians must consider the Laws of the Host country As Well As air Force regulations when making those decisions and interpreting the viability of a living will. These considerations Are not unique to an overseas location. In the United states air Force physicians must apply local state Laws and air Force regulations during the consideration of a particular living will. The second reply is from Mai. Frederic Carroll command judge advocate he 7th medical come this is the real scoop. . Army policy on treatment of terminally ill or comatose patients is contained in a 40-3, chapter 19, and in a department of the army letter to Field commanders dated aug. 30, 1985. This policy allows patients if they Are conscious to make their own decisions in consultation with their physician concerning the appropriateness of further treatment. When the patient is unable to communicate the medical staff is required to consult with the family to determine what the patient s wishes would be if the patient could be consulted. Army policy specifically allows for the termination of life sustaining treatment when this is the wish of the patient and the patient is in fact irreversibly terminally ill or in a persistent vegetative state. Army policy does not use the term a living this is probably one reason Why no one you have previously consulted gave you a definite answer. A living will is extremely useful in assisting your relatives and the medical staff to determine what your wishes Are and you can expect it to be followed if it is brought to the attention of the medical staff. If you would like to discuss this in further detail please Call me at ets 370-2600.
