Director Tony Scott who was behind the cameras for the relatively straightforward top gun goes in a far More circuitous a and ultimately unsuccessful a direction in his latest film revenge a sort of in depth study of the psychotic reactions that the emotion can engender. Revenge is a sweaty Claustrophobic strangely unsettling piece of work Choc full of gratuitous sex and violence As Well As any number of illogical touches that in the end Are too much for the actors to overcome. The film opens with Navy fighter Jock Jay Cochran Kevin Costner about to retire and wondering what to do with his life. His Friend Tiburon Mendez Anthony Quinn urges Cochran to join him at his enclave in Mexico As an All purpose aide. It s inferred but never stated directly that Quot Tibby Quot As he a known is a South of the Border drug lord. So the film in t even 15 minutes old when the first of Many unanswered questions will Spring to viewers minds. What reason could an upright . Military officer have for befriending such a Shady Type for that matter its hard to imagine under what circumstances these two could meet much less become friends. Anyway Cochran Isnit sure he wants to work for Tibby but he decides to head South and hang out for awhile to get a feel for his buddy a lifestyle which is lavish to put it mildly. Among Tibby s Many possessions happens to be his much younger wife the stunning Miry a Madeleine Stowe. From the moment Jay and Miry a Lay eyes on each other you know he a going to betray Tibby even though Costner sustains the will he or wont he indecision of his character quite Well for a while. The film then explores How the revenge Factor comes into play As this love Triangle closes in on itself. The movie is gorgeously photographed in Dusty sepia tones that make you feel warm under the Collar and All the principals acquit themselves quite Well. Costner overdoes the a shucks Gary Cooper bit at times but there a no denying his Charisma. Quinn is still one of the Best and longtime fans will Delight in the scene where he does a dance straight out of his Zorba heyday. And Stowe is an effective adulteress. Yet the cons ultimately end up outweighing the pros with Scott s worst excess being the violence. Of course revenge and violence go hand in hand but the scene about Midway through the film when a Bunch of Tibby a goons almost beat Cochran to death is simply revolting. And for a Coupe de Grace they even Butcher the Guys dog the Only truly sympathetic character in the entire Story. This scene is like a Cliff that the movie plunges off and Scott lets it land with a dreary Overly melodramatic ending that does t make much sense. While revenge is compelling at times it s also More than a Little unnerving. It s Worth a look if you re a Costner fan but somehow i just done to feel comfortable giving it More than two and a half stars out of four.
