European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - January 13, 1991, Darmstadt, Hesse Sunday january 13, 1991 the stars and stripes a page.21 commentary 1 a 4 up 4 h4 a a a i i i i shall has weeds even without Rose baseball socked it to Pete Rose again on thursday and this is All to the Good naturally. A special panel was convened by the Hall of Fame to decide whether Rose should be on the ballot next year when he becomes eligible for the first time. But the committee decided to recommend a change of rules to its rubber stamp Board of directors and de Terrhi Ned that anyone who is on the a permanently ineligible list front baseball As Rose is cannot be on the ballot. This is terrific because of course you can to have bums filling up that Little shrine the revered baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown . After All what will the Little children of America make of it that even a person with questionable character can be a Good ballplayer we All know the fairy tale that sports builds charac Ter. Of course it does. That a Why there Are so Many characters in the Hall of Fame. The Litany of miscreants who Are a a immortalized in the Hall has been Well documented and there is no need to go into it again Here. Suffice to say that while none was banished from baseball or was convicted of a felony As Rose was they were All great ballplayers As Rose was. What happened with the panels vote is that representatives of the Powers of organized baseball decided to save baseball from the defilement of having Pete Rose in their Hall of Fame. The decision was influenced in no Small degree by the people who run the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown As Well As by the office of organized baseball. Though Fay Vincent the commissioner of baseball was not on the panel he has previously indicated that he would endorse keeping the Hall Rose less. The committees decision superseded the position Daberkow of the baseball writers association of America which until now has had full authority to conduct the. Balloting. Some 450 members of the association Are eligible to vote for the Hall of Fame. And the committee s decision to in effect remove some of the Power of the w Riters group is a positive step though for the wrong reasons. Baseball is a business and newspapers Are a business and though the two often Cross they should be separate. Newspaper writers Are supposed to report the news. They Arentt supposed to make it. And when they vote for awards they Are helping to make the news. Quot a. A a a. More than that the sportswriters Are aiding the business of baseball which Isnit any of their business. Except again to report on. 1 had voted for Hall of Fame members for a number of years and it was fun and relatively harmless a its still properly not my place. When the Hall opened in 1936, sportswriters were asked to vote for members and probably flattered did so and have continued to. The Hall As a Start up business venture needed the publicity and who better of involve than the Guys who can give you All that free Ink the concept is a forerunner of the selection for players to All Star games. Get the fans involved in the voting and you la stir the fires of More attention to the product the More the turnstiles churn the Richer the lords of baseball get. The baseball Hall of tame and museum meanwhile is , not officially connected to organized baseball1. But it feeds of organized baseball to be sure. And when some Hall of Fame members said they might not attend the yearly ceremonies in Cooperstown if Rose w As voted in Well a this was taken seriously by that Little Community because a lot of people w Ith families visit there leg Laily and stay in the motels and cat in the restaurants and but the souvenirs in the stores that line main Street. If there is some a taint a a As they say conto Versy who knows what effect it could Hae on the Halls and the town s Cash Register but the decision by the special panel is an object lesson for the tiny tots of America who Are interested in the realities of life As seen through baseball. The Powers of baseball no longer Trust their publicity Arm of old the baseball writers to do the right thing and keep Rose off the ballot. All of the Rose Hall of Fame discus sign w hich was surely going to continue was obviously perceived As a detriment to the business of baseball. So the Powers hoped now that this would squelch it. The writers had made noises that in a democracy a Man should at least have the right to be on the ballot. The Powers of baseball weren to about to test democracy in this area and did no to want to a Embarrass de by possibly having Rose elected by the weird writers who arc capable apparently of anything especially with a pen in their hands. Strange too that the three Brand new ele tees a Rod Carew Gaylord Perry and Ferguson Jenkins a each said on wednesday that Pete Rose ugh questionably deserves to be in the Hall of tame. Maybe there will be a new special panel to change the baseball writers vote on those three Guys too. A. New York Timet son says Rose belongs in Hall Pete Rose or. A no doubt in my mind Springfield Ohio a Pete Rose or. Says a recommendation by a special committee that could keep his a father Pete Rose off the Hall of Fame ballot May mean double punishment. A if they done to let him in the Hall of Fame then there be a Hall of Fame a Rose or. Said thursday night.
