A storm of a Book a Tom Wolfe a novel about the bubbling cauldron of new York City Money and politics r has dwindled Down to paperback size in this Tom Hanks Bruce Willis film from director Brian Depalma. Not that the much hyped novel ostensibly about the clash Between the Rich White self styled Power brokers that inhabit the Chic upper East Side and the less fortunate denizens of the bombed out South Bronx will survive like Dick ends timeless tales of class struggles. The Book is admittedly a fun read but when you strip away its fat you re left with a Story about the discontents of three spoiled Middle aged White Guys two of whom Are interested Only in making it with younger women and another who just wants to stay drunk. But Depalma hurts himself by setting up relatively Low wattage stars in roles that seem awkwardly crafted. The Hack journalist Peter Fallows a a minor player in the Book a has been juiced up to create a Star vehicle  Willis. Fallows career is revived when he helps perpetrate a conspiracy to Frame Wall Street Mcgaw Hiz Sherman Mccoy Hanks after Mccoy takes a wrong turn ends up in the South Bronx in a Mercedes with his  Clad mistress Maria Melanie Griffith and has an Auto Accident that leaves a Black youth in a coma. On molls not daring to Snake their relationship Public Hanks and Griffith flee the scene but the youths cause is taken up by a rabble rousing ghetto preacher John Hancock with a style modelled after a new Yorkus own Rev a1 Sharpton. District attorney f. Murray Abraham sees the developing Media circus As a Way to boost his own political fortunes. Soon everyone wants a piece of Mccoy who is locked in a dizzying free fall from his wealthy Perch High atop the mud and grime. The film has interesting moments but Overall it just does t have enough to. Keep it afloat. Photographer Vilmos Zsigmond proves to be a diversion  a while As he works in an amazing array of camera angles but he soon goes from diverting to distracting. And Hanks just does no to have enough screen presence to make the role of Mccoy work As it should. Griffith is steady lacking Range but giving a dependable performance. Willis is Willis smart Aleck to the end. Depalma Carrie the untouchables never seems Able to give the Story the same sly tone As Wolfe. He also trashes the ending bringing in Morgan Freeman to play the books jewish judge so a Black Man can deliver the big politically sensitive final decision in the Case. There a also an annoying a a done to worry be Happy message about our judicial system that seems wedged in As an afterthought. A you la probably enjoy the Bonfire of. The vanities More if you Haven to read the Book.  failings As literature the Book had More wit Charm and savvy than Depalma can manage to put on the screen. It gets two and a half stars.
