Surveillance needed the alarming part of the Story about the no who was sentenced for attempt ing to have sex with a 14-year-old boy in the Firth Post Exchange restroom is the statement that three other soldiers have faced either court martial non judicial punishment or discharge from the Amyas a result of similar incidents in the same restroom. The trial prosecutor also stated that there had been reports of homosexual activity in the restroom before feb. 28, an that the activity May still be occurring. How can this be allowed to continue if this was a known place for homosexual activity it seems that the authorities have been looking the other Way. If the military police had bothered to Stop this that 14-year-old boy and we can Only wonder How Many others never would have had to experience this trauma. I am the Mother of a boy who has use this restroom. He is too old to accompany me to the ladies room and my husband in t always with us when we shop at the Exchange. What assurances do i have that this won t happen to my son the army supposedly has top notch surveillance experts and equipment the Exchange spends a great Deal of time and Money on surveillance to catch possible shoplifters. Aren t sodomy and sexual molestation of minors More serious than shoplifting the army is always talking about the importance of the Quality of life of Mili tary families. Let them put their Money where their Mouth is and clean up the Firth Exchange restroom. Laura Kay Zaval Munich Germany just punishment i am distressed about Cal Thomas commentary Blind Side of Justice keeps Bakker behind this Guy is telling me that it s Fine for the opulent Wasp non violent sector of our society to bilk millions of poor folks of their Money and not be incarcerated. He continues by saying that the crack dealers etc., should populate our Over crowded prison system not the nonviolent. Jim Bakker should have to Complete the duration of his 45-year term. I d rather see a Hundred crack dealers roaming the streets than one who has gained riches by Hood winking the word of god. Reginald m. Clark Stuttgart Germany forget about service i endorse cafes undertaking the operation of stars and stripes bookstores. Considering the track record of the Ster Ling management of cafes the boost Afes gave the video rental Industry when it took Over the army and air Force Heaters the mail order military clothing business when it took Over the military clothing sales and the de crease in consumption of alcohol due to increased prices and reduced selection with a resultant increase in profits of off Post outlets it is Only natural that cafes assume new Fields of Endeavor to explore. The advantages would be aafes1 scheduling ability text books would be available Only after classes Are completed ultimately reducing tuition assistance costs. Cafes would participate in the plan Ning of the curriculum to assure that Only those classes requiring the most expensive markup books would be offered. But we should look further than just this for future efforts. Cafes should take Over the commissary and troop Mes sing. Visualize the advantages of having a Chi Chi s in one mess Hall Popeye s i another and of course Burger King in another. Taking Over the commissary would As sure congressional approval it would totally remove the disparity Between on and off Post prices. This can be taken even further. There Are Many common functions within the military for which cafes could arrange contracting. Certainly military police functions could be arranged for part time Security guards could absorb their functions at reduced costs. Cafes could apply their Normal regressive sales tax markup after All re member that cafes is a major contributor to mar funds and the savings would be significant. This could go even further allow your imagination to roam rampant the Mili tary postal system an self service sup ply centers vehicle maintenance the options Are virtually limitless. Service is not the Paramount consideration taxation in the form of excess prof its is. Donald b. Janes Frankfurt by events the stars and stripes team is to be congratulated for their journalistic Effort helping american service people to adjust their lifestyles overseas. The proposed takeover by cafes will undoubtedly be followed by another de Mise in the Quality and selection of products see class i now class six with the consumer and or user suffering the consequences. Certainly cafes won t suffer any losses. Their profit distribution to the communities will be reduced proportionately and Congress will be Happy at How fast problems can be solved these Days or not. Let s look at the business aspect of stars and stripes. I am hot an accountant but i do have some common sense. Who not make the stars and Stripe available daily on the local Economy for 1.20 or 1.50 Marks we have thousands of retirees inter ested in american news and hundreds of thousands of local National friends for Mer employees Etc who Are vitally interested in knowing How the american Public feels and gaining a better under standing of our american Way of life. Besides the stars and stripes newspaper used to be free after world War ii and it was sold on the local Economy in France and West Germany. If this Quali fies As a suggestion i la take the credit the House committee staffers no stars and stripes experts should be in formed that the Severance pay for local National personnel in most cases was not generated from the bookstores but rather from regular operation and cafes takes Over it would be faced with the same Severance problem. Last but not least the House armed services committee faulted stars and stripes management for being slow to react to the draw Down. Where were they when millions of dollars Worth of furniture fixtures and equipment were trashed or improvement contracts were paid overseas due to the unexpected troop withdrawals and base closures Wake up folks. All of us including stars and stripes have been overcome by events not imaginable five years ago. Let s keep our favorite paper and bookstores As they Are charge a Nickel or dime More if that s what it takes to break even. Please let s not crowd our cafes stores any More than they Are Al ready. Oscr a. Dreikorn Stepha Skirchen Germany hurtful humor people who enjoy the privilege of being in the limelight some at any Cost it seems need to realize that the talents with which they be been showered Are not necessarily for indulging themselves in egocentric pursuits but rather for act ing As god s messengers for the Good of society s men women and children. It pains me deeply that an actor would choose to abuse such god Given Talent and the certain Power that goes with such Talent to poke fun at a Mere child apparently because this particular child s looks did not Appeal to him. Apologizing to the White House after wilfully hurting Chelsea Clinton s feel Ings can hardly undo the damage done to a child barely in her teens. Mike Myers presumption in negating such Beauty As unattractive happens to be his problem not Chelsea s. The sad Point however is that Chelsea May not realize this truth being Young and self conscious As most of us were at 13. Did t he realize that growing up is hard enough for most children let alone one who has made a major move from a familiar environment to a very unfamiliar one coping with a new school having to make new friends All in the full Glare of the limelight she s been forced into through no fault of her own constructive criticism plays an extremely important positive and valuable role in every democratic society. But to write or speak gibberish in the name of criticism fun and have it published or perform it for All the world to see and hear Only because one has the privilege and Power to do so docs not serve any purpose whatsoever except of course to satisfy the Mega ego of such individuals. Too often a fair objective and truly humorous professional treatment of issues and individuals tends to become sadly shortchanged through such selfish acts. Chandra Jahn Wiesbaden Germany get Back on track i keep hearing and Reading about con Gress trying to find Money from other programs to give As flood Relief. Today heard the president say the government will be unable to give the flood victims Al the Money needed to recover. That is very sad. Extremely sad when our government is so willing to pump up the defense Bud get each year so we can police up every nation that runs into trouble. We Are so willing to consider airstrikes against Bosnia but we arc struggling to help ourselves. This injustice makes me sick to my stomach. As a nation we need to get our priorities straight and put the Well being of our own people first again. We Are so Willi Riglo give Aid to any coun try that needs it except our own. No other country in the world is going to foot the Bill for the disaster that the Midwest has experienced. How can we put our own people Sec Ond How can we give the flood and drought victims second priority when America tries to intervene in every civil War or conflict that arises in the world the country s own problems Are ignored swept under the Rug. If America cannot get herself on track she will be picking herself up off of the ground on Day. Spec.
