The guilt is the result of his failure to react quickly enough to save president Kennedy who considered Horrigan his favorite agent on that fateful Day in Dallas 30 years ago. He s haunted by that episode because it has always made him wonder whether he froze be cause of a fear of carrying out these Cret service agent s ultimate act of duty taking a Bullet for the president. The whole world might be different if i was half As paranoid then As Lam today Horrigan says wearily. Then he begins receiving phone Calls from a Sociopath named Mitch Leary John Malkovich who seems to know All about Horrigan s past and begins making threats about taking Down the current commander in chief. Most of the serious groaners Stem from Horrigan s superfluous relation ship with another agent Lily Raines Rene Russo doing her Best with a thinly drawn part. For example at an embassy dinner when Raines shows up in a skintight gown Horrigan takes the Opportunity to ask where she keeps her firearm. But Eastwood really stretches him self Here giving Horrigan the kind of Multi layered character nuances that made his work in last year s smash unforgiven such a treat. For one thing Horrigan smiles. Sev eral times in fact. That might not seem like such a big Deal in itself. But Horri Gan is in Many ways a secret service version of san Francisco detective dirty Harry Callahan and you can comb through every one of those mov ies and never see Eastwood crack Evena Grin much less show his Teeth. He has made another smart move Here by letting his age show. Few screen stars have weathered Long Ca Reers As gracefully As Eastwood and fewer still would have the Confidence to poke fun at their vulnerabilities. Horri Gan is constantly ribbed about his age. In one scene after he has asked return to Active detail guarding the Prez the aging vet huffs and puffs As he trots along beside the presidential Limo Down Pennsylvania Avenue while his younger better conditioned colleagues try not to snicker. Yet As Good As Eastwood is a Large measure of the credit for this film s i Success has to go to Malkovich who has made his career playing oddball characters. He is so talented that he makes the philosophically twisted phone dialogues Between Horrigan and Leary into some of the film s most Riv eting scenes. During one Call Leary who has surprising secrets of his own that Are gradually revealed during the course of the Story tells Horrigan he should feel so bad about Kennedy s assassination because it was obvious Juk had a death wish. His favorite poem was rendezvous with death which is not a Good poem Frank he says with silk menace director Wolfgang Petersen keeps the action As taut As a Bowstring fro Start to finish. The Story has a Pace that never seems to Flag even in the relatively Calm scenes and the White knuckle Climax seems to last  my Money Eastwood has blown away both Stallone and Schwarzenegger Mere pups in comparison in this year s summer movie sweepstakes.
