Sept. 10 Twenty Black students enter Public schools in Tuskegee Birmingham and Mobile following a standoff Between Wallace and Federal authorities. Sept. 15 a dynamite bomb tears through the sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Bir Mingham killing four Black girls Ages 11 to 14. Two More Blacks Are killed by police in the ensuing riots. Alabama s comeback City in his office at the sixteenth Street Baptist Church where four Black girls were Bombe to death 30 years ago the Rev. Chris Hamlin talks proudly of Good race relations today i Birmingham. The City Long has had a Black mayor and a majority of Blacks on the City Council. Ten years ago mayor Richard Arlington started a program called leadership Birmingham to bring together representatives of the predominantly White suburbs and the predominantly Black inner City. Hamlin a native of Macon ga., arrived in birding Ham 3v years ago after serving a Church in Pontiac mich., where he met his wife. She thought he was nut when he suggested moving to the Alabama City. But she was very impressed he says. When northerners come to Birmingham they find a wonderful Metropolis a very clean City with Good Community services. I really love this  Herbert Jones 61, has lived in the City All his life. Now a waiter at the atrium restaurant at the Sheraton civic Center a recently expanded Conven Tion hotel Jones was working at a popular downtown restaurant 30 years ago when the demonstrations drove away most of the customers. Jones held on supporting the demonstrators Al though it was hurting him financially. He managed to Send his son and daughter to col lege. The daughter holds two master s degrees in math and speech and his son is a Navy Pilot. It was hard times for a while there but it s been going up and up Ever since he says.
