Hail to Billy Joel Billy Joel s performance at Niernberg was absolutely fantastic. It is one of the Best concerts i have been to in a while and to think it was. Free. It was More than i expected because he played a variety of songs from All his recordings. What an Honor to hear him sing and play piano Man. That was Worth my 1 i hour wait to get in the Gate. As to the comments about his use of profanity three words in two hours is absolutely grated compared with the average military s use of profane language. The people soldiers family members civilians i spoke with enjoyed his concert very much and were not offended by the profanity. The lady who was quoted in the paper As saying a the should have watched his language because of families and children present a needs a reality Check. Rock or pop concerts in general Are not targeted for families and children they Are targeted toward Young soldiers older teens and baby Boomers who grew up listening to Rock a no Roll. If she thought Billy Joel a concert was bad i would hate for her to attend a Rock concert that teens and children attend these Days. Joel would become a Saint in her concert journal. I do not advocate profanity but hear much worse coming out of the Mouths of men women mothers teens children and soldiers. In a hop ing Madonna will donate a free concert to our military Community next. She is americans Girlie next door. A Rita Davis Germany a. Time to put . First i am writing this letter in response to the excellent commentary a a it a easy to forget so hard to remember june 3 by Lance Gay. He describes the political and military situation for the last 50 years in Europe perfectly est is High time for the United states to leave Europe. A it is High time for the europeans to spend their own Money for their defense. A the German government May have to rethink its Constitution and decide for its army to do More than dig Wells for water Somalia the United states also should leave nato. A. Whenever there is a problem in any part of the world nations Are calling for help from the United states. Where Are the europeans when disaster strikes the United states with floods fires and earthquakes yes it is High time to leave Europe and spend the billions it costs us to maintain our forces in Europe in our own country. Besides our. Own country should always come first. A a. Delcy Quot Munich Germany a. A simplistic concepts an item in the june 17 stars and stripes says the Confederate Flag a rallied the troops for the slave holding South during the civil it also rallied the troops for the no Slaye holding Southern states which make up about a fourth of the confederacy. Why does the press never refer to the Union states As a the slave holding North a considering about a fourth of the Union were slave holding states we never hear a reference to the american Flag As a rallying the troops for the slave holding Northern yet that a exactly what it did in every engagement in which troops from Maryland Delaware Missouri or Kentucky took part. A couple of weeks ago the stars and stripes quoted an elementary school student summing up the civil War by saying in effect a some people wanted slavery and other people did no to in a concerned that the press and educators let such incorrect simplistic concepts pass wit Hout Challenge a Gene Phillips. Frankfurt Germany. A a a a ,. Bus rules to ride by a a a a classes for the 03/ 94 school year arc Over now yet the 94/95 year is not far off. When it starts a majority of. Our children will be Riding the bus which is As stated in the brochure containing the rules for the Kaiserslautern military Community Mica privilege and not a right. In be reviewed the rules outlining the consequences of the improper conduct of our children Riding the bus and while i wholeheartedly agree the safety and welfare of the children Riding the bus must be our number one concern i also feel some of the rules and subsequent punishment for violation of those rules Are Way out of line. The rules state any first time offence automatically results in suspension of bus Riding privileges for five Days i strongly disagree that allo the first time offences Are of such a nature to Strong action. It seems there is very Little regard to the fact that these buses transport children of All Ages from Kinder mariners to seniors. I ask myself does a five Day suspension for a six year old who forgets a bus pass for the first time equate to a five Day suspension for a i4-Ycar-old swinging on the overhead hand rails violations which could jeopardize the safety of the children on the bus be handled with a different set of rules than those violations which do not since a Community service program is in place in the Kmic area give the Parent a Choice of having their child serve two hours of service for every Day suspended for certain violations which do the safety of others or the actual suspension of bus Riding privileges. I also get a real in my Mouth whenever i hear the phrase a school bus transportation is a privilege not a i know that for every one of my stateside assignments,.bus transportation was provided in the Public schools my children attended at no additional Cost to the students family. Here Many of us do not have a Choice but to live on the eco Mony so it is not an option to live within walking distance. I am Here serving my county yet that statement goes against one of the things which i thought i was Here to preserve. I believe that current rules arc in dire need of review using a wider viewpoint which a committee of concerned parents can and would provide. _ a tech. Sgt. David a. Goshen Kaiserslautern Germany. A a comments offensive in reply to a letter on whining military retirees living abroad june 14i certainly would like to say More than a few words in support of the military retirees living abroad who Arentt whiners. I speak for the military retirees who strongly believe in the motto a retired a still they Are essentially frontline ambassadors and volunteers for their country the United states of americ who Are Active participants in both the military and Host country communities As Well As supporters of programs and organizations that would otherwise not be viable without their contributions. Military retirees abroad done to Honor the slogan a America a love it or leave it a nor Are they second class citizens because they a happen to be geographically Over Here it is a fact that military retirees important privileges and benefits a. Commissary base Exchange postal etc., that Are fully enjoyed by stateside military retirees As a result of the status of forces agreement sofa. A to be really fair and equal about benefits and privileges military retirees abroad receive a Cost of living allowance in lieu of these losses Well they done to. Aside from All the debates on the issues involving military retirees abroad what is important is that they continue to serve contribute and rep resent their country proudly and patriotically Over Here. They Are a positive Force or recruiting tool and spokesperson for the . Military and our country. \ if the letter writer is soon to join the distinct group of military retirees abroad i am certain that he will eventually find out that military retirees abroad for the most part Are not whiners. I found his comments offensive red la pots by. A Spang Dahlum a German sober reevaluation. 1 v. It seems that the most serious foreign policy question in this Post cold War Era is the Issue of North Korea. It is possible that a shooting War May begin on the korean Peninsula in weeks or months. Politicians on both sides Are rattling their sabers and talking Tough. In my opinion while talk is still the intervention of Choice our county should be engaged in an in depth discussion of our options especially of the underlying question a is the development of nuclear weapons by the North korean regime an ominous direct threat to our National Security in other words is nuclear proliferation in this part of the world Worth the lives of american military members one option which is not discussed very much is that perhaps the answer to the above question is a resounding a no a and that instead of threatening escalating interventions leading to War we might instead begin the phased withdrawal of our 37,000 troops. The people most at danger if the nuclear Genie escapes Japan and China As they would be within Range of nuclear warheads Are the very same governments most reluctant to take serious action to pressure the North koreans to meet International atomic Energy commission guidelines. The discussion must begin for the stakes Are As enormous As a single human life. Recent stateside news accounts report that the worst Case scenario Conte plat Tuby the Pentagon is for an All out attack by the North overtaking Seoul South Korea before the allies fortify. Of course this would entail carnage on a Large scale. Lets not a a slip into War with out a sober reevaluation of the situation. Now is the time. 7 a Gerald Apolito Livorno Italy a a a a Bip offs everywhere in response to the letter a Cheek about complaints june 19i am a military Retiree with 20 years of service. I have served at Many army posts and have chosen Sierra Vista fort Hua Chuca ariz., As my permanent Home. I found the people and the area excellent Over Many other places. My question to the letter writer is at How Many military posts have you served la to a not be naive. Shady realtors and businesses Are found everywhere. Lets also add other unit posts to your list. Every major Post has the usual rip off artists. Please do not single out All of fort Hua Chucan a population. A a.
