Its easy for him to keep the throttle cased Back considering the setting a the sleepy Backwoods Hamlet of Grady s.c., which Bills itself As a the Squash capital of the world and has an annual Parade featuring people dressed up like gourds to prove it. Fox plays Ben Stone the kind of Callow Yuppie character upon which he has based his entire career. Ben is a doctor about to Complete his residency but he has no Noble thoughts of serving humanity his plans Are to zoom off to Beverly Hills in his porsche to become a plastic surgeon for the Rich and famous. But while driving Cross country he gets lost and almost turns a couple of cows strolling Down a Back Road into hamburger. In swerving to avoid the bovines he tears up a White picket Fence that is the Pride and Joy of the local judge. The incensed Jurist comes up with a sentence that to Ben is a Fate worse than death a 32 hours of Community service in the towns local Hospital. A what is this the Twilight zone a Ben shouts. Its close. Grady is a surreal two stoplight town populated by a Gaggle of eccentric characters. They want Ben to stay because their Only doctor Barnard Hughes is on his last legs. Mayor Nicholson a wonderfully sly David Ogden stiers tells Ben that Money is no object a his salary would be the outlandish sum of $25,000 a year Ben with visions of Beverly Hills megabucks dancing in his head can Only gulp in bewilderment As he ponders this Rabbit Hole that has swallowed him. But he finds himself casing into the gentle rhythms of this place even though he a fighting it the whole Way. He a soon into  selfless acts As pulling a fishhook from the thumb of a bumbling Angler and Reading letters for an illiterate family. And then there a Lou Julie Warnera local Beauty who complicates his situation even More. When he first  her she a rising naked from the River like some modern Day Venus. As she passes the stunned Ben she drawls a you can blink  this is yet another movie about finding out what a really important in life and yet it succeeds where so Many of its Brethren have failed because it does no to make you feel like the message is being hammered into your head with a 20-Pound Ham. The cast of Quirky lovable characters is first rate. Warner shows much future Promise As she eases from Brittle scepticism to Sweet vulnerability in her relationship with Fox. And in addition to stiers and Hughes there Are noteworthy performances from Bridget Fonda As the town Vamp and Woody Harrelson As a goofy insurance Salesman who is put off by Ben s Slick City veneer. A it was the science part i had a problem  Fox can play this role in his sleep by now but he still proves irresistible and he makes Doc Hollywood Worth three stars.
