The army plans to first use an incentive program Quot to encourage people to leave on their own. As a taxpayer 1 am amazed that the army seems intent on spending As much Money As it can. There Are officers waiting to be passed Over by promotion boards so they can get out with Severance pay. The army wants to pay these people a separation incentive Worth maybe four times As much As Severance pay. Unless review boards Cost More than 1 think this is a waste of my tax dollars. The answer is easy. Kick out the duds. We should do that All along. If the numbers still done to work out offer the incentives to the Good soldiers you need to Cut. 1 if i seem heartless the contract Between the army and the duds Calls for Severance pay. They be been paid a Good salary while waiting to be fired. Done to Reward them for being persistent. A capt Robin Selk Heidelberg Germany a women can make Grade there has been lot of discussion in your letters Section about women serving in combat arms positions. In be read letters from pseudo Macho men who pontificate that women Are too weak physically and emotionally to accomplish that which we of the hairy chested gender Are Able to do. I am embarrassed and shocked that such closed minded people with such a very narrow sense of Justice Are allowed to even express such misinformed opinions without rebuke by their Peers. That these people take Pride in their warped views disturbs me. Let me say that i am an infantry no with nearly 17 years of service. All of those 17 years were spent in infantry platoons with the exception of about 2vi years As an Roth instructor at the University of Vermont. My first six years were with airborne units and the rest have been with mechanized infantry a mostly in Europe. My years As an no have been dedicated to teaching soldiers and cadets the Art of leadership and Smalt unit warfare. As an Roth instructor i taught infantry tactics and techniques to a wide variety of social and economic groups of both genders. It seems the army has determined that if a Cadet can Lead other cadets in the harsh training environment of the infantry that same Cadet can also be depended on to Lead soldiers in the finance office As a lieutenant. The training at fort Bragg advanced Camp was just As hard As my advanced individual training at fort Polk almost 17 years ago. Some women did just As Well As the men did. Others did better than the men. Some failed miserably. One of my cadets from Vermont did much better than some of the males with prior enlisted infantry service. The secret to integrating women into the infantry Armor and artillery is to establish Tough physical and mental standards for accepting All soldiers into these career Fields. In a quite sure the women would not like to be Given these opportunities As a political prize but would rather earn the Blue Cord like her male Peers. We Musi accept that the army physical fitness test is a measure of fitness not a Standard to set As a goal for All career Fields. Develop a selection process now to eliminate the weak men in those positions and accept now the women who can take it. In 1948, Congress desegregated the army. In a sure that there was quite an argument about that but in time an in term rated military society became accepted and served As a Model for the general society. Women in combat arms Are inevitable and the sooner it happens the better then we can move on to More important issues and problems. Men the ladies deserve the right to be what they want to be and we done to have the right to keep them from it. If they can compete to the Standard we Pride ourselves in then let them come. Well All be better for it. But done to lower the Standard a there a too Many non producing men in the ranks already. A sgt. 1st class John v. Civil rights commission to be highly interesting. 1 was glad to find that others share my feelings toward the army slogan and the inspector general. A be All you can be is a wonderful idea however it is not realistic. I feel a More realistic slogan would be something like a be Only that which your Chain of command is willing to allow you to a slogan like this would let people know from the Start not to expect to be judged on Job performance knowledge skills or potential. Personality would be the Only Factor based on my experience with the in i believe that its existence is for the purpose of finding reasons to condone or ways to cover up discriminatory actions by High ranking individuals. Discovering the truth of a situation does no to seem to me to be High on its list of priorities. A spec. . Gehman la Duisburg Germany win Evv America s Boris the right Wing coup in the soviet Union failed says president George Bush because once people taste Freedom they can to put it Back in the Box. Very True but Isnit it hypocritical and ambiguous As we watch him and the right Wing administration he represents trying and succeeding for the past 12 years to Box up the new freedoms gained under democratic presidents for those who done to remember or never knew president Roosevelt i or opened a whole new a a boxy of freedoms the freedoms a a from some of the very ones the ninth amendment meant to guarantee but were never unbowed and backed them with a Liberal supreme court the process continuing under Kennedy and Johnson. Things like Freedom from the fear of hunger homelessness and joblessness add sickness Teedom from intrusion into our private lives Freedom from unreasonable restrictions on abortion Freedom from various discrimination letters to the editor Freedom from the majority religion imposing its private beliefs upon minority faiths or Public policy Freedom from discretionary searches and seizures or self incrimination and a score of other a freedoms from that most americans once thought of As timeless. The freedoms in the russian Box Are surely no More deserving than our own freedoms and rights that have been boxed or about to be boxed. America it seems needs its own version of a Boris Yeltsin. A Joe Wiegman Wiesbaden Germany hydroplaning safely i feel that comments must be made regarding a recent article in the sunday supplement. For the most part the article a summer sizzles with Road Pitfalls a was Well written and informative but comment must be made on the advice Given to drive 100 Kilometres per hour during heavy rain. Nothing could be further from the truth or More dangerous. One Basic Tenet that All Drivers should know is at what Speed they Are Likely to expect the vehicle to begin hydroplaning. There is a very simple math exercise that will give a very Good answer. To determine the Speed that hydroplaning will begin multiply the Square Root of the tire pressure by nine. That will give the Speed at which hydroplaning can be expected. Since most tires Are inflated to 36 pounds per Square Inch multiply 6 the Square Root of 36 by 9. Example is 6 x 9 54 Mph. Since some tires Are inflated to lesser pressures the hydroplane Point comes at a lower Speed. Tread depth makes no appreciable difference to the Speed. Done to take my word for this ask other safety professionals. The Best advice is adjust your driving to conditions.
