Span Dahlem Bummer Span Dahlem s housing office selected As Best in Safe for 1993? what Crite Ria do these people use my experience with them suggests otherwise. I arrived at Span Dahlem a in june1993, during my in processing briefing we were briefed by housing personnel that it was going to be difficult to find a place to live and that we were pretty much on our own. This was very True the housing office made no attempt to match incoming personnel requiring housing with outgoing personnel vacating housing with the exception of a Blue Binder containing about Naif a dozen list Ings of available quarters that is kept on a table in the waiting area. I was fortunate enough after looking for two months to find a Nice place about 20 minutes away. I Learned about this opening by word of Mouth and the listing never appeared in the Blue Book at the housing office. The housing office took More than a week to prepare the necessary contracts and Only did it that quickly because i hounded them on the phone and in person. When i finally had everything signed sealed and delivered i was asked to fill out a critique which i did. I have yet to receive a reply to the blistering critique that i submitted though i signed and requested a response. The final insult was the housing of fice s failure to submit the necessary paperwork to finance to Start my proper housing allowances. It took More than two months before i began to receive Basic allowance for quarters overseas housing allowance and Cost of living Al Lowance. In All fairness i must report that once i made them aware of the problem the housing office rectified it Al most at once even sending a copy of the paperwork to my deployed location. I find it particularly interesting that the housing office apparently does a Good Job of finding service members a place to live in the United states. Maybe they should spend a Little More time helping us find a place to live Here. So this is the Best Safe has to offer i guess the award committee based their award on How Well you line up your ducks instead of How Many people you found a House for and How quickly you did so. Joseph v. Sambor Span Dahlem a Germany /. Over paranoid reaction the Over paranoid dependent husband whose letter states that an american forces network commercial perpetuates the Guise that dependent husbands Are Lazy ignorant. Men who Send their wives off. Because they Are too Lazy to get a Job watches entirely too much. An because it seems to have damaged his Gray matter. An commercials Are informative period. They display no stereotype nor should they offend anyone. This partic ular commercial states that some people Don t have Money ready when the paper Carrier comes to collect and they implore you to be More considerate. The fact that the person depicted to not have Money promptly is a Man is purely coincidental. I Don t like everything i see on an but i Don t look too far into what i see to try to find something that is not there. Don t blame an for something they did t do and certainly Don t cry sexual discrimination where none exists. Thomas p. Lane Raf Mildenhall England harmless commercial it s truly unfortunate that so Many people Lack self Worth or Confidence. When a harmless commercial by an the stars and stripes Carrier collecting from a dependent husband brings the response i read dec. 22, i just have to pause. This reaction or thought process must have come after reviewing at least two episodes of Donahue. I guess we need a review process where anything that could be considered offensive to individuals or groups be eliminated. In Forth namely you la always find a sufficient number of people to object to almost any position cause or action. But there is Hope. For the enlightened masses there is the new York times or los Angeles times with their unequalled political correctness not restricted to the editorial Page. Maybe i m in need of sensitivity training. I think i got a fair amount read ing the letters to the editor Section. Daniel l. Barbeau. Pitburg a Germany. " a . ". Kids beg to differ my students and i disagree with the writer of toys waste space dec 10. My students Are from Atterberry elementary school in Frankfurt Germany and they have worked very hard to collect toys Candy and warm clothing for the bosnian children. They were thrilled to have the Opportunity to participate in operation provide Santa when i read them the letter which criticized the air dropping of toys they were quite upset. They could not believe that anyone could possibly complain about sending toys to innocent children. Here Are some of their responses out of the Mouths of babes kids should have toys during Christmas even if there is a War. I think we should give the children in bos Nia some support. I feel sorry for them. Daniel Matheson Grade 5 i think that the air drop of toys is Avery Good idea. If i was a child in a War it would be Good to know that someone cared. Heidi Mather Grade 4 sending toys and Candy is not a waste of Energy and space. It will give some Joy and cheer to the sick children. I should know. I be been sick a lot and toys make me Happy. The people who said it was wrong to Send toys just does t know How it feels to be a kid in a War. Jamie Hubbell Grade 4 i donated a lot of stuff to the bosnian children and i really think this was a great idea. Do you know How much kids like toys toys Are their lives. You were once a kid too. Brandi Miloy Grade 4 i know How the kids Are feeling in bos Nia. My dad is a nurse and he had to go to Bosnia to help people. When my dad was gone i Felt the same As the bosnian kids. When i go to bed i Lay in bed and think about the kids there. I m glad i not in the War. Sarah Cairo Grade 4 i gave the kids in Bosnia some of my toys and clothing too. I want to help them to forget about the War. I love Al the people in Yugoslavia. I want to help them so bad. Erika Maldonado Grade 4 excuse me or. Scrooge the Man who wrote the letter. You had no right to write that note. What if you were a kid you have no Christmas spirit. Dana Fleming Grade 2 the bosnian kids look very sick. They have cuts bruises and broken Bones. They need something to cheer them up. The kids should know there s someone out in the world that cares them be cause they Are in the Middle of a Sterling Grade 4 put yourself in their shoes and think How you would feel if you got bombed were cold starving and had your family members taken away. You people that have complained about the toys should think again. Laura Brown Grade 4 the people in Bosnia have no Money to buy things like Candy and toys. If i was in a War and had nothing to enjoy i would feel bad if no one cared about me. Sonya floras Grade 4 if the bosnian kids had a stuffed Bear or a doll they would love it because they need a Friend. They do not have any friends. Kayla Staples Grade 2. We did not just Send toys we sent clothes and food too. Toys mean a lot to kids. The kids Are very innocent. They will be scarred for life because of this War. Jilliam Butler Grade 5. If the children of Bosnia had toys maybe they would t worry so much about dying. They would Stop crying. Toys would bring them Joy i Hope you can use these letters i someway. Dorry Hummer teacher Atterberry elementary school Frankfurt Germany skating rink smokers if commands Are supposed to been Cou raging their soldiers to quit smoking then Why Are morale welfare and recreation facilities making it so easy for them to smoke in fact encouraging it yesterday afternoon i took my family of five to the Augsburg Community skat ing rink for some family recreation. When we walked in i suddenly had recollections of a German disco bar. Even though the Large area near the Entrance door is not a designated smoking area there were people smoking at three of the tables As Well As two employees be Hind the counter along with their friends who were standing at the counter. It was impossible to pay the Entrance fee and Check out skates without being subjected to lots of secondhand smoke. It was bad enough for me and much More so for my three children. In addition in Augsburg Only four of24 lanes in the Bowling Alley Are designated for nonsmokers. The manager says that there is More demand for smoking lanes. Are 83 percent of Augsburg Community resident smokers or is it that nonsmokers simply avoid the Bowling Alley because there is so much second hand smoke smoking should be banned in All work and recreation buildings except when an enclosed smoke room can be provided so secondhand smoke can be completely Iso lated from those who do not want to breathe it. The Bottom line is that non smokers Are Najj being adequately acted from the dangers irritation an stink of tobacco smoke in our recreational facilities.
