European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - January 09, 1994, Darmstadt, Hesse Life a Chicago native Ruby Wax Star of the bbl s the full Wax my questions Are the first thing everyone wants to know but the last thing they would Ever Hob Ruby Wax cracks up the British by Nina Darnton the new York times posing As a dumb blonde wearing a banana Peel As a wig Ruby Wax interviewed Dudley Moore recently on one of her Infa Mous television Chat shows. When she asked him what do you do for foreplay he laughed slightly embarrassed and replied you know this used to be the indeed. But nothing in Britain these Days is what it was As Wax s popularity demonstrates. The 39-year old american comedian has become famous for her Bull in a China shop technique capitalizing on foisting the Pushy motor mouthed american stereotype on the genteel British. They love her. Or the loathe her. But More and More of them Are watching her show. American audiences sampled Wax s style last month when Hob showed a half hour comic documentary called Wax cracks Hollywood in the pro Gram which mixed a scripted Story with real life interviews with Hollywood hopefuls Wax pretended to try to break into the big time. In the belief that it helps an aspiring Starlet to have a famous Lover she got a Date with actor Joe Mantegna and thrust a piece of paper at him. If you could just say we had sex she said it would really help my americans May or May not find this funny but they re unlikely to be shocked by it having become used to the likes of Howard Stern. In Britain however the take no prisoners style of this diminutive actress in flashy clothes and Bright red lipstick stands out. Critics Point out that it allows the British to feel smug and Superior in the face of american excess. In return they Are making her a Star. Aside from her periodic comic documentaries she has a regular comedy program the full Wax which is in its fourth season on the bbl. It s a confrontational half hour that combines oddball comic sketches with celebrity interviews. She also put on a one woman stage show in the West end of London in 1992 that won rave reviews and sizable audiences. The full Wax is not a place for Jet lagged celebrities to promote themselves without risk. Wax scandalized British audiences recently by asking Zsa Zsa Gabor if she had had a face lift and then sprawled Over her Lap looking for the scars. In a society with rigid social decorum she does t mind breaking the rules. My questions Are the first thing everyone wants to know but the last thing they would Ever ask she says. Some critics find her appalling. Ruby Wax lacks the genes that in Normal human beings cause shame John Naughton wrote in the observer. But Charles Spencer in the daily Telegraph disagreed calling her one of the finest comic talents of her in her documentaries and on the Street comic sketches Wax is trying to develop a new form she says and sometimes her audience just does t get it. Take the sketch in which she pretended to break into actress Joanna Lumley s apartment and found her supposedly drunk in bed with a Man in Black garters who Wax said was not or. the switchboard at the bbl was jammed for hours with television Calls from viewers enraged that Wax invaded Joanna Lumley s privacy. Of course the sketch was entirely scripted Mike to blur the edges of when it s real and when it in to so some people think i must really be doing it Wax says. Now How stupid Are they i mean what do they think i got into her House and put up lighting and sound equipment while she was sleeping and she did t know about it Wax found her Way to comedy by Accident. A Chi Cago native she went to Britain at 22 to study drama. Her first audition was a disaster she said. I read Juliet and i did t know anything about drama she recalled. But i knew i had to be emotional and i stood onstage and quietly said to my self my dog is dead. My dog is dead.1 and then i started crying and doing verse and All you heard was sobbing and once in a while a word coming through. They were just after studying privately she entered the Royal scottish Academy and then joined the Royal shake Speare company where she played wenches for five years. I could see i was t great onstage she said. Finally my Friend Alan Rickman said Why Don t you try something else like writing comedy fast " she never looked Back and aside from visits she never really went Home again. She married a British director de Bye who directed Wax cracks Holly Wood and has three children. Would she return to the United states if she became a Success on Hob i m Rentable she says.
