European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - February 2, 1989, Darmstadt, Hesse Thursday february 2, 1989 the stars and stripes Page 21 rep Pic cirt s missing game might Cost Hohn title the saying goes a Day late and a Dollar but for the Hahn i Hawks it might be a Day missing which can make them come up the Dollar and a basketball championship Short. The i Hawks have lost Only two Bennor games and sweeps this week against bad Kreuz Nach and shape next week would still leave the charges of Darrell mood shivering out in the Bennor cold. If shape sweeps its set against second place Brussels this week it clinches the Bennor title no matter what Hahn does the rest of the year because it plays one More league game than the i Hawks. Such a shape sweep would give the spartans a 10-0 league record and drop the second place Brig ands to 7-3. Two wins this week and two wins Over shape would leave the i Hawks languishing in second place with a 9-2 record a half game out of a piece of the title because they Only played one game against wingless Oesterberg. Hahn and Oesterberg were scheduled to play each other dec. 9-10 at Oesterberg. However both clubs went to the Hague preseason round Robin tournament under the agreement that their game in the tournament would count As a league game and if they should happen to meet twice both games would count As conference games. The respective coaches also agreed that if they did t meet twice the second league game would not be rescheduled. They met Only once. We knew the possible consequences when we accepted the invitation to play in the Hague tournament Hahn coach Darrell mood said wednesday. And now we re in a hopeless position because the Best we can finish in Bennor is second place if we win our last four games. Neither Tom Hahn and Tom Richards nor i have any qualms about going to the Hague tournament. We got to play six games Early in the season. Playing the six games As opposed to the two Confer ence games definitely helped us. Shape and accent have participated in that tournament several times and it always helped their program. This year the people in the Hague decided that they would like to have two other Bennor teams come to their tournament and invited us and Oesterberg and we were glad to accept mood added. Brussels still has a part in the title picture. If the brigands win two this week and two against Bonn next week they take the championship. If shape and Brussels split Brussels would have to lose a pair to Bonn for Hahn to stand any Chance at a title. I think it is very Good that Hahn and Oesterberg got to play five extra games in the Hague tournament. However i also feel that different arrange ments should have been made regarding making up their league games. Experience is very important but extra games should not be permitted at the expense of the official league program. Speaking of schedules there really was t much sense in drawing up a basketball Chart for the Ger Many aaa for this season. A week has t passed but what at least one sat urday game was switched to midweek. Like the coaches i thought the tuesday Friday schedule of two years ago was much better than the Friday saturday program. However some principals apparently thought otherwise and this year s sched ule reflected their thoughts in a Friday saturday Only Agenda. Obviously some other principals saw the value of the midweek Competition because coaches Haven t experienced too much difficulty getting their re quests for the changes approved. While shape is the Only team that can Clinch an outright league championship this week the Munich girls and boys can assure themselves of at least a share of the Germany a South titles by registering a Brace of victories each Over Bamberg. Accent s Megan Baerman and Aviano s Keith Crawford walk off with player of the week laurels this time. Baerman playing Only 20 minutes each game had 20 Points and 16 rebounds against bad Kreuz Nach Friday and came Back for a 21-Point, 10 rebound performance against the a carats saturday. Crawford racked up 22 Points 14 rebounds and 13 steals against notre Dame on Friday. The next Day the 6-2 guard had 17 Points a dozen boards and 11 steals As the saints stretched their winning Streak to 25th games Over the last two years. This is the last week of regular season wrestling Competition for the Germany Bennor teams. Heidelberg has clinched a share of the Germany aaa title with a 5-0 record. Ramstein is second with a 4-1 Mark. Heidelberg beat the royals 38-30 in their match. Pitburg is 3-0 in a play and Patch is 2-1. They Are paired in the season finale with the Barons assured of at least a tie for the title. Giessen is 3-0 in a Central and Baum older and Berlin Are both 2-1. The Griffins Are in the same triangular As Baumholzer but they already have decision Ned Berlin and the bears beat Baum older in their encounter. Vilseck and Ansbach Are undefeated in a South strife with 3-0 Marks and they collide saturday. Of cent and shape Are undefeated in the Bennor and Brussels has lost Only once. All three teams have been assigned to the Oesterberg quadrangular this week. Regional tournaments for the Germany Bennor schools take place a week from saturday at Hanau Wiesbaden Ramstein and Vilseck and the top four wrestlers in each weight bracket will Advance to the Central european finals feb. 17-18 at Heidelberg. The stars and stripes big Money fans flames of today s hot stove league Tymi Metully up National baseball writer new York since baseball s birth in the 19th Century fans spent Winter trying to keep the game alive. Thus came the hot stove league where the Only entry requirement was desire to talk baseball. Trades would come along and fans could mull them by the warmth of the fire. A debate Over the game s Best play ers would consume weeks. Now and then a player would make news by holding out for More Money. Nowadays Winter brings a tradition that would offend the men who 150 years ago played for fun. Wednesday marked the Start of arbitration season baseball s game within a game. In a ritual spawning its own set of statistics eligible players take their 1989 salary request to an arbitrator. So if Winter makes you Pine for your scorecard you can keep track of How Many cases reach arbitration. Instead of marking your Calendar until opening Day try calculating winners and losers. Rather than figuring batting averages count who got the biggest raise. For instance los Angeles Pitcher Orel Hershiser and Oakland outfielder Jose Canseco could both earn raises of More than $1 million if their cases go Well. That would land them a place in baseball history As Well As in the hearts of Bank ers. From feb. 1 through feb. 20, arbitrators in Chicago new York and los an Geles hear arguments. Players and management name a figure then plead the Case. The arbitrator must Rule in favor of one with no Compromise allowed. Play ers must own three years of major league experience to be eligible. As a measure of How much Money is at stake recall that just 10 years ago the average major league salary was $113,558. This year the difference be tween Andy Van Slyke s salary request and what the Pittsburgh pirates Are of Fering is four times that amount. Van Slyke will emerge with $1.883 million or $ 1.350 million unless the parties Settle. Nor can anyone argue about the amount of Money available. This Winter baseball signed a pair of television deals that should yield $1.5 billion Over the next four years. Since hearings began in 1974, 265 cases have reached arbitration. Players have won 117, the owners 148. As of Early monday 67 cases were scheduled this year though the parties can Settle until the hearing room. New York Yankees first baseman Don Mattingly owns the biggest baseball salary awarded in a hearing room. Of the original eight the Hartford franchise became the Brooklyn dodgers the following year and the one in Louisville eventually ended up in Pittsburgh. Replied with $2 million. Theories vary on which party the pro Cess favors. One school of thought says the uncertainties of arbitration Lead both sides to bargain in Good Faith. Another says players win because the team winds up paying than it wants. Like the game itself arbitration involves strategy. Some clubs do their own work others hire consultants. Each party looks for just the right figure a balance Between making Money and pleasing the arbitrator. Hearing rooms bring a strategy of their own. A club must do its Best to minimize a player s contribution and having done so markets the same player to an adoring Public. Sometimes the process leaves bitter Ness some people accept it As big Busi Ness. In any Case it s baseball and come Winter you take what you can get
