A Nasa once again delayed the Roll out of discovery to the launch pad tuesday As shuttle managers debated what to do about suspect engine Turbo pumps that could put off the flight indefinitely. The move to launch pad 39b was rescheduled fro thursday to Friday to give technicians More time to Complete lengthy testing. The Roll out which was originally scheduled for Jan.26, has been delayed a total of eight Days by various technical problems. The postponements have erase the target launch Date of feb. 23, and the space Agency says it does t have a new Date. The difficulty stems from the december flight of Atlantis. Post flight inspection of Atlantis engines Dis closed two tiny cracks in a bearing Assembly in one of three High pressure liquid oxygen Turbo pumps. Engineers believe the cracks were caused by stress corrosion from moisture trapped inside the bearing during the manufacturing process. After it was determined that two of discovery s tur Bop umps underwent the same manufacturing process As the cracked one shuttle managers said saturday it i Likely at least two and maybe All three of discovery s Turbo pumps will be replaced with new carefully inspected units. The Turbo pump which turns the shuttle s liquid oxygen into Gas operates at extremely High temperatures and speeds and its failure could set off an explosion that could destroy the spaceship. If the launch is delayed too Long it would affect the follow on Atlantis Mission which is to dispatch a probe to the planet Venus after a liftoff scheduled for april 28. There is Only a 25-Day period when Venus will be in position to receive a visitor from Earth. After that it will be another two years before the planet is aligned properly with Earth.
