Broadway productions featured on London stages by Matt Wolf associated press it s beginning to look like Broadway in Britain with 10 recent new York productions now running or soon to open in London. American plays and musicals have always been featured on the London stage from Arthur Miller plays some of which Are now running to musical revivals such As the current Brigadoon. But what s surprising about the rest of the american lineup is its specific resemblance to that of new York s current fare. Among american shows already running Are the off Broadway musical three Guys naked from the Waist Down at the Donar warehouse David Mamet s Broadway hit Speed the a wat the National and a walk in the Woods at the comedy which ended its commercially unsuccessful Broadway run last june. Soon to arrive Are comic Jackie Mason s Solo show the world according to me which starts its six week run feb. 15 at the playhouse the satiric revue forbidden Broadway opening March 2 at the Fortune and Robert Harling s steel magnolias due March 7 at the Lyric. Add the Spring premieres of m. Butterfly Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune and Jerry Zaks revival of anything goes and what plays in new York seems very Likely to play in London. In shopping for products creators and producers emphasize that their work transcends parochial National boundaries. I m doing steel magnolias because i think this is a particular play that s Universal said David Pugh who is producing the British debut of the Long running off Broadway hit set in a Louisiana Beauty parlor. Directed by actress Julia Mckenzie the comedy will Star British born Rosemary Harris a Broadway regular and Joely Richardson the younger of Vanessa Redgrave s two thespian daughters. It happens to be As relevant in Stoke on Trent As it is in Louisiana said Pugh who in 1987 co produced Lyle Kessler s orphans an earlier London production of an american play. It however closed at a deficit. In the Case of Speed the plow Mamet is seen As an International writer who merits inclusion in the repertory of any major theater. He has very much been a writer for the National said David Auxin executive director of the theater where the author s pulitzer prize winning Glengarry Glen Ross had its world premiere in 1983. Speed the plow which starred Ron Silver Joe Mantegna and Rock Singer Madonna who was roasted by critics on Broadway opened Jan. 25 with a mixed Canadian and British cast. American writers in turn enjoy the prestige of a London run. Terrence Mcnally whose Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune is in its second year off Broadway said he was As excited about that play s London opening in May As he would have been if it had been the new York debut. The London production s two character cast consists of britons Brian Cox and Julie Walters who was Rita in educating Rita. Mcnally s musical the rink flopped in London last year As it had earlier on Broadway. The Fate of the rink and orphans indicates that London productions Aren t always the Money makers dreamed of by new York veterans. Neither follies the 1971 Stephen Sondheim musical that ends its debut London engagement saturday nor driving miss Daisy the Alfred Uhry comedy which finished six months on the West end last november fully recouped its investment. Still the West end s lower costs Are appealing. Both steel magnolias and forbidden Broadway Cost 200,000 pounds $375,000about the Price of today s average off Broadway show. The theatrical traffic is not of course entirely one Way. Shirley Valentine the one woman play by liverpudlian Willy Russell opens at Broadway s Booth theater on feb. 16. Such London hits As lend me a Tenor written by an american and run for your wife open in March on Broadway. 22 stripes Magazine february 2, 1989
