European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - September 20, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Thursday september 20, 1990 the stars and stripes a Page 11 Reader praises hospitality of Small base it or Ftp Yuri dear Ann Landers i was fascinated by the letter from the 19-year-old woman who vowed never to marry. Her female relatives appeared to be happier and their lives seemed much More exciting after their husbands died. I am a 70-year-old woman who has spent the last several years catering to the demands of a Man who is so self entered that its sickening. For example we done to travel because he a a can to sleep in a strange bed the airlines Are never on time there Are too Many crazy Drivers on the Road and the big cities Are full of How could i have known 45 years ago that he would be like this your inference that their wives a did something to these men to make them so disagreeable is an insult to those of tis who Are struggling to make a life with husbands who Are demanding and unappreciative. Yes we do spend our Days in quiet desperation while our widowed friends Are having a Good time eating out playing cards travelling and living relatively stress free lives. Many men take absolutely no responsibility for their health until it Breaks Down from too much booze overeating working too hard carousing Etc. I Challenge you the next time you see a woman pushing her husband through the supermarket in a wheelchair ask her a what she did to a one of Many in Portland dear one you have a soul sister in Butte Mont. Read on dear Ann Landers the Young woman who decided not to marry because her widowed aunts seem so much happier since their husbands died is on to something. I wish i had had her Wisdom when i was 19. I am 63. Most of the women of my generation were brought up with the idea that marriage was the most Noble goal. Careers were sought by some but the concept of having a husband and children was the Ideal. We treated our husbands the Way our mothers treated theirs a like some kind of Royalty. By the time i realized what i wanted out of my marriage i had five children and no Way to support them. When Only one was left at Home i decided to leave. Before i could get out the door my husband had a heart attack. I was trapped. For the next two years he was in the Hospital a lot and it was heaven to be Home without him. There was no one to watch me like a Hawk and criticize everything i did and no one jumping All Over me asking a what did you say that for a i have two daughters and neither has Ever married. They be had romances companions and lovers but no husbands. I envy them. A faceless nameless fan in Butte dear faceless Here i go again if he wont go with you for counselling go alone. Can to Hurt. Might help. Even if the situation seems hopeless just talking about it often eases the Burden. My thanks to All who wrote. Dear Ann Landers when a Reader asked Why preparation h is the most frequently shoplifted item in drugstores you said a because people Are embarrassed about having a the a surely you jest. Everybody knows that preparation h is used by cocaine addicts to shrink and soothe the swollen irritated membranes in the nose. Where have you been anyway a metro Millie dear metro Millie i guess one of us has been hanging out with fools. C creators Syndicate there is a Little known . Station the 47th medical det located outside London in a Village named Chessington. As americans on Holiday travelling from West Germany we experienced some appreciated assistance and moral support from some British employees at this base. The base itself is rarely used for military activity there is one american a handful of employees and the Raf uses the base for Cadet physical training. To americans visiting England it is a great location for lodging an Ideal environment convenient to the rail system one half mile away. However the most important thing for us during our stay was the people. We arrived for our four Day stay driving a vehicle that appeared to be on its last legs. The ?T73 vow bus had covered a lot of Miles and we were experiencing scary problems with the transmission. Upon reaching a Essington we obtained lodging while also informing an employee Pat Lynch that we would need to get the Van to a Mechanic. Like Good Fortune raining Down upon us Pat happened to know a Good exceptional Mechanic. In minutes he had called the Mechanic obtained a diagnosis of the problem and personally directed us to the repair site eight Miles writer says Money with the crisis in the persian Gulf Many units in the european theater Are sending personnel to the Middle East. What a great Way to support our country however lets not forget to care for soldiers before they deploy. All deploying soldiers Are required to attend some Type of redeployment briefing. This briefing tells them what to do professionally and socially prior to deploying. One important aspect that is omitted is that of banking. The Community Bank merchants already receives too much criticism for procedures and prices they have no control Over. Merchants is just a Dod contractor ask Dod dear privileged military housing residents it broke our hearts to hear that your dishwashers be used due to a mechanical defect. With the current budget deficit we wonder Why the american taxpayer is paying for dishwashers anyway. This just sounds like another Case of fraud waste and abuse that a Chipping away at our ability to reduce this Pesky Little deficit thing. A Julia Adams Birkert a Istvan Slenkai we stayed Over the weekend while the vehicle awaited parts. The final Cost was less than it could have been and we were Able to meet the Cost of returning to Germany. During our stay we Felt protected by a Small family of about 10 people. While we prepared ourselves for the worst possible diagnosis on the truck the Keene family invited us for a Barbecue and hospitality and a couple of games of snooker. The next evening one of the Gate guards took us for an informed driving tour of London a All the great Sites. Another Day a Friend of the Keenes showed us Epsom Downs race track. My wife and i would like to thank everyone at the Chessington base for All their assistance understanding and exceptionally generous treatment. You made a month Long Holiday come to an enjoyable conclusion when it could have ended in hopeless time to Start hitchhiking fashion. Like everywhere else there is Rumor of base closure. If it happens it most certainly will not be based on the Quality and friendliness of the individuals who work there. A Patrick Mallon Augsburg West German matters Are vital if a unit or parts thereof does deploy banking should be a top priority. If not How is a family member to gain Access to the soldiers pay hard to believe but some soldiers do not allow Bank Access to their spouses. Units should take full responsibility for their personnel prior to deployment. Banking should be considered a top priority in redeployment briefings even More so with sure pay. Do not wait until after the fact and then try to Force the Bank manager or the finance office to make exceptions financially under the a taking care of soldiers pretext. Take care of soldiers prior to deployment and make their Home lives less of a Burden As Well As making the units lives easier. A name and location withheld a Virginia Fleming a Robert Aschberger be.
