Relatively unknown to tourists it was Here that politicians congregated to discuss whatever it is that politicians discuss. Nearby is bratwurst Herz s restaurant which is More than 300 years old. Longo rates it As excellent. When you exit Dallmayr s and continue North make a right at the next Corner. Half a Block farther on you come to to the alter Hof Munich s oldest residence and Street. It was the first Ducal Castle of the House of Witt Elsbach and first occupied in 1253. Continuing Down the Street you come to the world famous Hof bauhaus which has a tradition dating Back to 1591. The current building which dates from 1896, has become such a popular tourist attraction that Many residents shun the place. But it is Well Worth a look and maybe a cold Beer and a plate of roast Chicken. Retracing our Steps and then making a right once Back on Diene Strasse we end up at Max Joseph Platz which is flanked by the neoclassical facades of the National theater the resident and the Arcade of the Central Post office. The National theater was built in 1818 but was destroyed by fire in 1823 and rebuilt two years later. It was destroyed again in world War ii and rebuilt in 1963. The resident museum is also Here. The building is a conglomeration of More than three centuries of the Witt Elsbach family s renovations additions and later restorations. This museum alone could take All Day a and it is Only one of 31 museums in Munich. North of the resident at Odeon Platz is the Belderr Halle a Monument dedicated in 1844 As a memorial to the bavarian army. Across the Odeon Platz is the hopfgarten a spacious Garden like Park with fountains and the Temple of Diana set in the Center. At the far end is a Little known landmark the Tomb of the unknown Soldier. It is on most tourist maps As Krieger Densmal War memorial but Longo says he has a hard time finding reference to it in other guides. The Monument was erected in 1947 to Honor Munich residents who were killed wounded or missing in action in both world wars. Making our Way Back to Odeon Platz it is time to head toward the new botanical Garden one of two in Munich. It is about a 10 minute walk after going behind the Thestine Kirche a roman style Church built in 1688. Along the Way we pass Maximilian Platz another Par like area with the Witt Elsbacher statue and fountains. Off to the left is move Pic a popular restaurant that features fresh lobster on thursdays As Well As Many ice Cream dishes. Quot Nice place to come on a summer night Quot Kay Burrus says. With a menu of nearly 200 selections you Are bound to find something you will like. Some selections Are in English and the waiters can help translate the others. Most meals Are less than 20 Marks and some of the More popular Wurst dishes Cost less than 10 Marks. After a Brief lunch under the open sky in the Center of Mathauser s a thanks to Al Weiber Sommer similar to the stateside Indian summer a we make our Way South into Munich s seedier Side or As Joe Burrus puts it Quot a Munich by night tour by  but we Are on our Way to look at the  which none of the tour guides have seen. Located on the Corner of Althe Merand  it is Worth the Stop. It is richly decorated in Gold Motif and the altar has a life size depiction of the last supper. We Are now done with our tour. Sendlinger Tor is just two blocks South on  and we Are ready to get Back on Tram 27 for the ride Home. While our group went a Little faster than Normal the trip can easily be done at a leisurely Pace in less than a Day. The route circles the old City and provides an excellent exposure to the atmosphere of West Germany s third largest City. And even with the two stops at area restaurants the Cost can easily be kept below 35 Marks per person As Long As you can resist the urge to buy something in one of the hundreds of shops and department stores you pass. As you visit the oktoberfest keep in mind the rest of the City. With its Well deserved reputation As a modern International City that is clean efficient and Safe it will be Well Worth a look.
