Tour guides know this better than anyone else. While the immediate attraction of Munich during the next three weeks will be the oktoberfest the City has much More to offer visitors. Quot the City is Ever changing Quot says Joe Longo a Volunteer tour guide for the army Community service s Munich newcomer tour. After living in Munich for 15 years he is still discovering new Sites. He and four other Volunteer tour guides got together last week to compare notes. The saturday session became a walking tour of downtown Munich with a few extras that Many visitors to Munich might not find on their own. The group consisted of Longo who works for Munich s military Community services division Eric Griffin an army major assigned to the 66th military intelligence brigade his wife Donna Isaacks a math teacher at Munich american High school Joe Burrus the Munich army emergency Relief fund officer and Burrus wife Kay of the civilian personnel office. I tagged along eager to find out where the tour guides like to go when they get together. If you have about six hours to spare and a Good pair of walking shoes Here is a Good Way to see the City on your own and at your own Pace. The tour begins at Sendlinger Tor. The arched Gate part of the second fortification of Munich was built in 1318 by King Ludwig the bavarian. It was once the main Entrance for North South traffic. Today it is bordered by a Park like Plaza that is set off by a part of the old City Wall. You get there on Tram 27 from Schwa see Strasse about two blocks North of Mcgraw Cavern or on the a Bahn from Giesing. Sendlinger Tor Platz is one of Many places in the City to watch the oktoberfest parades on the first saturday and sunday of the fest. It is Longo s favorite Parade viewing spot and he gets a ringside seat by reserving a table at one of the area restaurants. But others have their favorite spots too. Burrus likes to watch from the Assembly area near the Deutscher museum where the groups get ready for the Parade. It is a great spot for taking pictures he says.
