European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - September 20, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 20 a a the stars and stripes thursday september 20,1990 no More cart but porsche tried a yes its True that Well be dropping cart indy car racing at the end of the season but id prefer the announcement to be made by porsche of North America. Its an american series and we feel it s Only fair that they make the announcement speaking was Manfred Jantke porsche racing a european press chief. Now that the announcement of porsche a departure from american cart racing has been made official by porsche a of North America with Headquarters in Reno nev., the details Are open for discussion. The announcement was made on tuesday a a we entered cart racing on a three year plan a Jantke said from his a Offenhausen office Quot and we gave it a real go. We finished 10th in the series during our first year we finished fourth last year and we were programmed to win this year but we had no Chance because of the late Rule changes. A we never had time to get our 1990 car right. It became an impossible Effort. But like i said we gave it a go and we re proud of that. It was a new adventure for the changes to which Jantke was referring involved porsche a March 90p Carbon composite indy car Chassis. It was banned last january a move that effectively put porsche out of business on the american circuits this season. The cart Board of directors voted Down the All Randy Barnett Carbon fiber Chassis on safety grounds after Kaying such a Chassis earlier and the British March firm that supplies indy car Chassis to porsche had to Start Over. And with the season opening in mid april it was obviously All too late. Porsche which entered cart racing with its own engine Chassis setup in the fall of 1987 with a1 Unser driving had contracted with March for Chassis work at the beginning of the 1988 season. Its own car had failed to make the Grade but there was no turning Back now. Using the March Chassis from the beginning of the 1988 season the porsche indy car program progressed Well until this year. The italian Teo Fabi drove for porsche in 1988 and ?T89, and again this season when he was joined by John Andretti Mario Andretti a Nephew. Porsche a Lone Victory in cart racing came last year with Fabi winning the mid Ohio round. But things had gone Well the italian also scoring second in two races third in another one and placing fourth in five other cart rounds. An sex formula one Driver and indy 500 pole win Ner Fabi made a Strong showing during 1989, and if the new March porsche car had not been ruled out last Winter the winning of the cart championship by porsche this year was a distinct possibility especially with its two car team. With porsche a departure from cart and also from sports car world championship racing the concentration will now return fully to formula one where porsche is supplying the British arrows team with 3.5-liter, v-12 engines for the next four seasons. The arrows team is sponsored by the japanese footwork company. Porsche a Jantke said a a porsche a reputation is on the line again in formula one racing and Well be going All out with arrows for 1991 and beyond. The engine is already at Suzuka Japan and it s possible that it will Power an arrows car in the japanese grand prix on oct. 21. A we will make an announcement on who will drive for arrows during 1991 Early next while the arrows team has never won a formula one championship the new porsche v-12 engine May provide that Opportunity. There a precedence certainly As porsche Turbo engines powered the British Mclaren team to three straight world championships during the mid-1980s, the austrian Ace Niki Lauda winning in 1984 and the Frenchman Alain Prost in 1985 and ?T86.
