European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - December 27, 1992, Darmstadt, Hesse After following to into Somalia lets focus on the exit Clarence Page newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst a most famous quote came in response to a dispatch from artist Frederic Remington in 1898 in Cuba where Hearst sent him to draw pictures of America s War with Spain. When Remington cabled that there was no War and he had nothing to draw Hearst wired Back a you furnish the pictures and ill furnish the Hearst who Seldom let the truth get in the Way of a Good Story made Good on his Promise. With relentless Page 1 coverage of Spain a alleged affronts he helped press America into the Spanish american War history repeats itself with the War in Somalia. This time television has furnished the pictures and president Bush has furnished what we Hope wont be a War but just might. In a glad we re there. Our cause is Noble workable and just. But i am troubled that the Somalia buildup confirms How much americans foreign policy is driven in these Post cold War Days by the assignment desks of the television networks. Why has the United states become so concerned All of a sudden with Somalia while it continues to ignore say the Sudan where other innocents have similarly been starving and suffering or Mozambique Liberia or Haiti is it too much to ask for a Little consistency in our foreign policy or Are we destined in the new world order to whip around and respond Only to those crises that move us with powerful pictures and if you done to have pictures the Laws of to Rule that you done to have a Story. So the message to the worlds evil strongmen might Well be if you want to avoid trouble from the superpowers keep television cameras out. In Somalia Scase it was the Lack of Central authority that allowed journalists Freedom to roam Somalia and take in its suffering in All of its miserable Ness. Unfortunately 300,000 people had to die and a presidential election had to pass before the video finally brought results during the slow news Days of president Bush a lame Duck period. To driven foreign policy is worrisome because to is such a powerful but fickle medium. Wielded by courageous reporters and Crews it can perform a commendable service. But while stories sometimes get on to because they Are important other times stories become important because they Are on to. Somalia is an important Story but it was also important almost two years ago before 300,000 died of starvation. Instead the rest of the world pretty much ignored Somalia As its rival clans fell into War with each other. Central authority collapsed and hundreds of thousands were left to starve like orphans of the cold War. Boutros Boutros Ghali of Egypt the United nations first Secretary general from the african continent complained last summer that Western nations and their Media were so much More eager to intervene in the european Slaughter Between serbs croats and bosnian than in the Slaughter and Star vation taking place in Africa. Asked Why he put such a High priority on their Fate Boutros Ghali responded acidly a maybe its because in a a his Choice of words was historically significant. A a wog is a racial slur with colonial roots. So while Boutros Ghali should be pleased that the United states at Long last has intervened in Somalia we also must ask what next it is not our getting into Somalia that worries me. It is our getting out. The United states must begin the end game now. Even while our troops Are making sure people Are getting fed we should be pushing the United nations to take Over the task of working with clan leaders to re establish Central authority and set up an interim government while we make a Graceful exit. It is the United nations not the United states that is Best equipped with moral authority and a worldwide consensus among nations big and Small to impose order in Somalia and elsewhere. It is an Opportunity the world must take. Television will give us the pictures but Only leadership will end War. The Chicago Tri Bun athe Rise of Young geniuses is an old Story Andy Rooney recently i was watching Charles Kuralt a sunday morning Pruggi uni a alow i like a lot and they had a Good Story about a 75-year-old violin teacher and one of her pupils an 11-year-old Genius who played As though shed been practising for 50 years. Most of us done to feel threatened by geniuses or envious of them. Itzhak Perlman May feel some pressure from All the child prodigies coming along who play the violin but i done to because in a not a violinist. When i was Young i comforted myself Over not being a Genius at anything by thinking that while they were smart they were also strange. By the time id actually met a few geniuses and found that the smartest of them were also Good at appearing absolutely Normal in conversation i did no to feel threatened by them because for some reason Young geniuses seem to limit their activity to being amazing at doing things i done to want to do anyway. There a always a chess player 8 years old threatening the worlds greatest players. You read about the girl in the third Grade who has memorized the phone Book of Youngstown Ohio or a boy who can spell words backward As quickly As you can spell them Forward. Writing does no to seem to be something that 12 year old geniuses do and that a a Comfort to me. I done to know Why it is but most of the so called geniuses Are musical or mathematical. In be heard of kids who can play the piano like Horowitz but in be never heard of one who writes like Shakespeare a or even As Well As Mike Royko. There Are different kinds of geniuses and one is easier to recognize than the other. The calculating Genius who can multiply 2,384 limes 63 in his head and come up with the right answer is easy to spot because like the violinist his brilliance is on display and easy to document. He could do his act on stage. The other kind of Genius Isnit always recognized. The creative Genius can to do card tricks or come up with the Square Root of anything. It May be a while before people notice that he or she often thinks of something in a new and different and usually better Way.
